The price of wood in lumber is 80% of the total costs. While the costs of my company in Romania are already 30% higher, this makes us uncompetitive on the international market. This figure gets us out, not us, but the whole Romanian sector is removed from the competition by prices that are not related to reality. It is about the purchase price at the factory gate, more precisely on the forest road "

The general manager of the Holzindustrie Schweighofer Romania wood processing company, Dan Bănacu, warned that the price of logs harvested from the forests in Romania is too high and not correlated with the current market trends. The Romanian wood processing sector is thus removed from the international competition.

Several members of the Schweighofer Group management from the headquarters in Vienna, as well as the management of the Romanian branch, recently presented their vision on the situation of the Romanian wood processing industry.

Dan Bănacu also pointed out that the high purchase price of logs produced in Romania had the effect of decreasing the lumber exports in 2018 to about a half of the 2017’s volumes. Thus, at the end of 2017 Romania exported 1,181,660 cubic meters of lumber, but these volumes dropped to 672,980 cubic meters at the end of 2018, according to the graphs presented by Schweighofer Romania, which cites information provided by Intrastat.

Bănacu added that the high log prices in Romania make the wood processing sector uncompetitive on the international market.

"You can notice a strong decline in lumber exports, and this has only one cause - the decrease of the competitiveness of the Romanian forestry sector. (...). We are in a situation where the prices in Romania exceed by far the European prices for the same assortment of wood and for the same conditions of delivery ", said Dan Bănacu.

He claimed that the price demanded by the Romanian suppliers of wood raw materials is not related to reality.

"Today we pay 86 euros (per cubic meter of logs used to make the highest quality timber), while in Austria we pay 65 euros per cubic meter of the same material, in the Czech Republic 50 euros, in Germany 55 euros, and in Slovakia 65 euros. The price of wood in lumber is 80% of the total costs. While the costs of my company in Romania are already 30% higher, this makes us uncompetitive on the international market. This figure gets us out, not us, but the whole Romanian sector is removed from the competition by prices that are not related to reality. It is about the purchase price at the factory gate, more precisely on the forest road ", explained Dan Bănacu.

"In Austria, the same quantity of wood can be bought at half price. Do you realize what this difference means in the finite product? If 80% of the cost is the price of timber, the work almost does not matter. It is a huge difference that makes us uncompetitive", said Dan Bănacu.

He pointed out that one of the reasons for the high price of the wood of Romanian origin is the structure of the Romanian wood costs, which is a specific issue for the country, but it is different from the cost structure of the wood suppliers from other countries. In addition, Schweighofer Romania spends an additional 10 euros on every cubic meter of Romanian wood purchased because of the specific Romanian environment of forest exploitation, which, unlike any other wood exploitation in Europe, requires additional quality checks.

"Another characteristic of the cost of Romanian wood is the fact that Schweighofer Romania measures the size of the logs five times up to the factory gate. We first measure the wood before making the management plan. We measure it the second time when we allocate it to the wood harvesting company, the third time when the harvesting company cuts the wood from the forest, we measure the size of the wood the fourth time we load the truck, and we measure the fifth time when the supplier's truck reaches the factory gate, adding to each measurement 2 euros at the cost of the cubic meter. So 10 euros per cubic meter is added only for the need to measure five times, instead of measuring only once, as we do as a general procedure in any other European country where we harvest wood, "added the general manager of Schweighofer Romania.

On the other hand, he also criticized the way of establishing the sale price of logs made by the Romanian legislation.

"On the other hand, prices for harvesting Romanian wood are set in Romania according to certain rules and laws, and unfortunately the way in which the calculation is carried out (by the authorities) does not reflect what is happening on other markets. The price always goes up, the price can only increase, the administrators can’t lower the price if the demand for the purchase of logs decreases, and they cannot lower the selling price even if they can manage their forests more efficiently. These possibilities do not exist and should be improved in the future”, Dan Bănacu informed the Romanian media.

He also showed that in 2018 the company processed about 6% of the timber marketed in Romania, and "not 96%", and imported about 46% of the timber that Schweighofer processed in Romanian factories. This year the proportion of imported wood exceeds 50%.

On the other hand, the representative of the Board of Directors of the Holzindustrie Schweighofer Group, Jurgen Bergner, said that the company's strategy for its activity in Romania is currently increasing productivity in the three factories in the country.

"Our current challenge is to increase productivity in the 3 Romanian timber factories. The entire Romanian forestry sector needs to be competitive with other countries, and this is our target here, we want to develop a sustainable woodworking industry, that will be able to compete in international markets, "said Jurgen Bergner.

He pointed out that the non-competitive prices for the purchase of wood raw materials affects not only Schweighofer Romania, but the entire Romanian wood processing industry.

"It is not just how much we will pay (for the purchase of logs from Romania), but how much the market will pay. So it is not only our company, but it is about the price at which all the wood processing companies from the central-European area will buy their raw material and about how all Romanian wood processing companies will buy their wood, "Jurgen Bergner told the Romanian press.

The representative of the Board of Directors of the Holzindustrie Schweighofer Group claimed that the Austrian company continues to buy Romanian logs in this context of non-competitive prices because it wants to support the wood processing industry in Romania.

"In the end, the goal is to develop the wood processing industry in Romania. We buy wood from the Romanian forests and this is our contribution. I would like the wood we are processing in Romania to be 100% Romanian wood. Our contribution to the Romanian economy is the fact that we take the log, turn it into a product with added value and thus facilitate other companies in Romania or abroad to use this product", said Jurgen Bergner.

Moreover, he argued that the Romanian wood is not only more expensive, but also less qualitative for use in constructions, than the wood from the countries around Romania. The representative of the Board of Directors of the Holzindustrie Schweighofer Group said that the Romanian wood has a lower density than the wood from the countries of Central Europe, it is lighter, which makes it less resistant in construction, which causes an economic disadvantage in the commercialization for the construction market.

"We have a social responsibility as a corporation, we have 2,700 employees in our factories in Romania, we have created another 4,000 indirect jobs in the sector. The market is self-regulating, but we believe in our investments in Romania and I think there is a huge potential in the Romanian forestry sector ", said Bergner.

Regarding the image that Schweighofer Romania has had in the last years in the Romanian society, Bergner stressed that the company is by no means in a dominant position on the Romanian market of wood exploitation.

"When you are a big player in the forestry industry and you operate in a country with a low profile industry, you are always in a dominant position. But in terms of numbers, we buy 6% of the wood harvested annually in Romania, so we are far from being in a dominant position in Romania, but there are other competitors much larger than us ", commented the representative of the Board of Directors of Holzindustrie Schweighofer Group.

The Holzindustrie Schweighofer company operates 3 timber factories in Romania, the last one opened in Reci in 2015, and two factories producing wood materials for the furniture industry, the last one opened in Comanesti in 2010.

Today we pay 86 euros (per cubic meter of logs used to make the highest quality timber), while in Austria we pay 65 euros per cubic meter of the same material, in the Czech Republic 50 euros, in Germany 55 … Continue reading →

[4713,4716,4715,4714
3284,3286,3274,3276
post-78302","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-companies-in-the-timber-industry","category-latest-trends","category-market-analysis","category-wood-industry-prices","tag-logs","tag-prices","tag-romania","tag-schweighofer","topic-forestry","topic-industry-prices","topic-sawmilling","area-europe

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
