A little more than a year has passed since the moment when the first stone was laid in the foundation of Kronospan's new plywood factory in Smorgon, Belarus. Now, the construction of Kronospan's plywood plant called Ultra Ply LLC has been completed and it\u00a0specializes in the production of plywood from spruce and pine. In full mode plywood production will reach 250,000 m3 per year.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In Belarus, Kronospan has other two production sites in Mogilev-Kronospan OSB LLC and in Smorgon-Kronospan LLC.<\/p>\n

The grand opening of the plant took place at the end of August, in which the management of the Kronospan company, government officials and many potential customers participated.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>According to Daryush Vechorkevich,\u00a0Development Director of Kronospan,\u00a0all potential customers who visited Smorgon by now were surprised by the scale of production. In the meantime, the plant is in test mode. But in a month or so it will reach a capacity of 30 - 50%. According to experts, 120 people will work here in a three-shift mode. For the production, Italian and Japanese woodworking machinery were installed.<\/p>\n

''After the Smorgon plywood plant reaches full capacity, the volume plywood produced will be 250 thousand cubic meters per year. For comparison: about 350 thousand cubic meters of plywood are produced in all of Poland,\u201d said Daryush Vechorkevich.<\/p>\n

''In the world market there is now very fierce competition. We and our customers are interested in this enterprise producing high-quality products in large volumes. At the moment, there is no plant in the world that has the same technology as here. If we talk about the environmental component of production, then this plant is at a new world level, \u201dDaryush Vechorkevich assured.<\/p>\n

The cost of the Ultra Ply investment project is estimated at 100 million euros.<\/p>\n

According to unconfirmed reports, approximately half of the production volume is planned to be delivered to the German market.<\/p>\n

At the initial stage, the company plans to produce plywood with a format of 2500 x 1250 mm of medium thickness.\u00a0The scope of this plywood is in packaging and construction.\u00a0Plywood will be sold under the Ultra Ply brand.<\/p>\n

In the future, Kronospan is considering the possibility of investing in a LVL timber production plant at a site in Eastern Europe.\u00a0There are several accommodation options that are considered by the company, in particular Belarus, Russia or Northeast Poland.\u00a0Also from the discussion stage is the scope of the project.\u00a0In addition to the direct construction of an LVL-timber production plant, the company is also considering the possibility of combining LVL-timber production plants and a plywood factory on one site.<\/p>\n

We asked\u00a0Alexey Beschastnov, senior manager of\u00a0StepChange Consulting<\/span><\/strong>, how these investments will affect the wood-plate and plywood markets\u00a0.<\/p>\n

Alexey Beschastnov noted that the construction of the Kronospan plywood factory has been under discussion for a long time.\u00a0The biggest news in this story is, of course, the fact that the Kronospan Group (the world's largest producer of wood-based panels) became interested in plywood as a product.\u00a0The key reason here was probably the search for new areas for growth.\u00a0With this step, Kronospan will be able to combine its world experience in the production and sales of wood products (mainly OSB, MDF, chipboard and value-added products based on them) with the capabilities of a new range of veneer-based products.<\/p>\n

Products based on veneer for Kronospan are, first of all, apparently softwood plywood, but there are also directions for future growth on a wide range: in LVL, in birch plywood (including laminated), in more exotic products like OSB or chipboard veneered (and possibly lamination for OSB), in very exotic products like PSL (parallel strand lumber, from plywood or LVL waste), as well as the ability to support the production of LVL beams by OSL \/ LSL (beams manufactured by technology close to OSB production technology).<\/p>\n

Of all these products, birch plywood would probably be the most troubling news for Russian (and Belarusian) producers, since birch plywood is perhaps the only product on a global scale where Russian producers dominate - and where foreign players in Russia are relatively inconspicuous.\u00a0If Kronospan starts to produce birch plywood, this can significantly redraw the plywood business in Russia - both in terms of the share of the main players, and in terms of margin and volume.\u00a0Kronospan Group is able to quickly increase capacity and actively move to new markets and customers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
