Sales of German sawmills, planing mills and wood impregnators have increased nominally by around 33% over the past ten years.\u00a0Revenues reached 6.4 billion euros in 2018 as compared to 4.8 billion euros in 2008.\u00a0In the exceptionally dry and warm year of 2018, industry sales increased by 8% year-on-year, exceeding the 6 billion euro mark for the first time.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The industry relies on local wood, but also on imports of raw materials.\u00a0Exports represent just under one third of the overall sales (or 2 billion euros).\u00a0The number of companies decreased from 435 to 324 between 2008 and 2018.<\/p>\n

2018 large logging volumes of softwood from heat-damaged forests<\/strong><\/p>\n

The German forests suffered in 2018 from water scarcity and heat.\u00a0The proportion of trees with clear crowns increased to 29% (2017: 23%).\u00a0Softwood trees such as spruce and pine are especially prone to drought and become more susceptible to pests such as the bark beetle.\u00a0According to the logging statistics of the German Federal Statistical Office, a total of 65 million cubic meters of wood were felled in 2018.\u00a0In particular, wood from spruce and other conifers such as firs and Douglas firs (39 million cubic meters) as well as pine and larch wood (12 million cubic meters) were extracted intensively from the forest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of the logging of the softwood species, 24 million cubic meters had to be felled due to forest damage, while the number of pines and larches was estimated at 5 million cubic meters.\u00a0The impact caused by insect damage in softwoods such as spruce, fir and Douglas fir was 44% and in pine and larch wood 9%.<\/p>\n

The forest stores more carbon<\/strong><\/p>\n

The German forest as carbon storage fulfills an important ecological function.\u00a0The total amount of carbon bound in the forest (wood and soils) in the years from 2014 to 2017 increased from 3.05 to 3.10 billion tonnes.<\/p>\n

The state is the largest forest owner<\/strong><\/p>\n

As reported by the Federal Statistical Office on the occasion of the forest summit, forest damage as a result of drought and heat hits both private forest owners and the state as forest owners themselves. In 2016 there were a total of about 8.5 million ha of forest in Germany.\u00a0Of these, 3.9 million ha were private forest, 2.4 million ha state forest and 2.3 million ha corporate forestry.<\/p>\n
