In 2018, Russian exports to China reached 15.65 million cubic meters, which is twice as much as in 2014! Despite the signs of weakness of China's timber market in 2018, the volume of Russian exports to China is still growing.

With the “Belt and Road” initiative, Russian wood has now easier access into major Chinese cities. With the continuous decline in the price of Russian timber and increase in Chinese demand, the import volume of Russian timber will continue to rise.

In the future, New Zealand's production will increase

In 2018, China imported 41.597 million cubic meters of coniferous logs, amounting to 5.786 billion US dollars, up 8.8% and 12.6% respectively. The main reason for the growth of coniferous logs was the significant increase in imports of New Zealand radiata pine logs. The quality is stable, and radiata pine is generally used in domestic construction and furniture applications.

According to the latest statistics, the radiata pine plantations planted in New Zealand in the mid-to-late 1980s have now entered a large-scale deforestation period. In the next 3-5 years, New Zealand timber production will increase significantly, with an estimated annual production of 350 million cubic meters. As the world's largest importer of logs, New Zealand's logs are expected to enter the Chinese market in large quantities in the next 3-5 years.

Pinus radiata; Pinus sylvestris

The texture of the Russian scotch pine and white pine is considered by the Chinese as excellent, durable, in building materials, ancient gardens, furniture panels, home decoration keel and other building materials.

On the other hand, New Zealand's radiata pine has beautiful patterns and makes furniture more attractive. Radiata pine has many advantages such as anti-corrosion and moisture-proof. The radiata pine furniture-grade logs sold on the market are all dried. Due to its strong load capacity, radiata pine is also widely used as construction timber.

At present, radiata pine is cheaper than Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica, which gives it a competitive advantage.

"Export War": will wait and see

China is currently the world's largest importer of logs. As the domestic economic level continues to increase, the demand for imported timber will increase in the future! In the next 3-5 years, a large number of radiata pines will enter the Chinese market with great pressure, which will inevitably have an impact on the import status of Russian timber. In the future, if the export of New Zealand timber and Russian timber to China will become a "war", we will have to wait and see!

Russia is currently China’s largest timber source.
