American Softwoods Consultant, Charles Trevor, was interviewed by AEIM (Spanish Association of Wood Trade and Industry) and the article appeared in two publications, Interempresas and Madera-Sostenible.\u00a0Europe is a mature market which continues to offer niche opportunities for U.S. softwood companies. Spain is now the third largest market for U.S. softwood exports, behind Italy and the United Kingdom. In the interview, Charles discussed sales of American Softwoods to the European Union of $26.8 million in 2018 and the first quarter of 2019 has seen $5.8 million (2018 = $5.9 million).<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

He also reported \u201cEurope has the potential to grow in importance for us, particularly for sales of pressure treated wood for use in outdoor\/garden applications. No other softwood takes treatment as well as Southern Yellow Pine or looks as good.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>He further stated, \u201cWe are optimistic that with our continuing promotional relationship with AEIM, our sales will continue to increase as they have done for the past three or four years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Interview:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What are your general impressions of the Interzum fair, held recently?<\/h3>\n
\n

Interzum is always an important fair for us.\u00a0It is not at all a German fair or even a European fair.\u00a0In the last edition of May we received inquiries from around the world.\u00a0This time we were surprised by the quality of the inquiries received, which turned out to be more numerous than those received in 2017. We look forward to the Carrefour International du Bois in Nantes, in June 2020, which seems to us an even better fair for our exporting companies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What are the current softwood market developments of the American Softwoods producers?<\/h3>\n
\n

Now that China is becoming a more difficult market for us, due to the trade dispute between this country and the United States, there is a renewed interest in European markets by exporters of coniferous and hardwoods from the United States.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Sales of U.S. coniferous timber to the European Union were $ 26.8 million in 2018, slightly below the 2017 total of 27.6.\u00a0During the first quarter of 2019, sales were generally maintained at 5.8 million dollars (in 2018 they were 5.9 million).\u00a0Europe is a mature market that continues to offer specific opportunities for softwood timber companies in the United States.\u00a0Spain is now the third most important market for coniferous timber exports from the United States, after Italy and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Can you give us information about United States softwood production statistics for this year?<\/h3>\n
\n

The production of southern yellow pine (SYP) in 2018 was 44.5 million cubic meters, compared to 43.2 in 2017. Production in 2018 of softwood in the west was 343.1 million cubic meters.\u00a0The softwood timber market in the United States is the largest in the world.\u00a0Wood construction has a dominant position in the market and will continue to dominate the demand for coniferous wood in the immediate future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What are the perspectives for US producers of softwood with regard to exports to Europe?<\/h3>\n
\n

Europe has growth potential and will be more relevant to us, especially for sales of pressure treated wood for use in garden \/ outdoor applications.\u00a0No other coniferous wood has a treatment as good as southern yellow pine with such a good appearance.\u00a0Many decking installers, for example, will only use SYP once they have tried it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Do you think that strengthening the US dollar can affect exports to Europe?<\/h3>\n
\n

Having a currency that is strengthened is always an additional challenge for our European customers and for our exporters.\u00a0However, with careful currency coverage and precise prices, we believe that the dangers of currency fluctuations can be managed.<\/p>\n
