Such a prosperous market sentiment brought vitality to the Chinese timber market, which is undergoing structural changes.

Among the many regional timber markets in the Midwest, Sichuan is undoubtedly one of the best. In recent years, with the continuous advance of the “Belt and Road” construction, timber sales in Sichuan have been climbing. Statistics show that the trade volume of wood and wood products in Sichuan Qingbaijiang International Timber Exchange Center in 2018 reached 2 million cubic meters, a 135% increase from 2017. Among them, the annual sales volume of Russian pine, such as white pine and scotch pine, reached 1 million cubic meters, with sales of about 1.6 billion yuan. So what is the reason for the rapid development of timber trade in Sichuan in just a few years?

According to a recent investigation of the Chinese media, thanks to China's national strategic deployment of the “Belt and Road” initiative, the pine industry in the central and western regions of Sichuan has ushered in a period of rapid development in recent years, and the market demand continues to grow. In an interview with Chinese reporters, Xintianshun Building Materials Management Department of Qingbaijiang District said that at present, the monthly import volume of pine in the Qingbaijiang timber trading market in Sichuan is about 40 trains, the contract is 100,000 cubic meters per month, and the annual sales volume exceeds 1 million cubic meters.

"This huge amount couldn't have been imagined in the past few years." In the last years, the import of pine construction materials in the southwestern Sichuan market was less than 2/3 of what is at the moment. Imports of pines have grown so rapidly during the last years, mainly thanks to the “One Belt, One Road” national strategy.

The “One Belt, One Road” construction enhances the openness of the western region, and provides a powerful new momentum for the development of the market. In recent years, Sichuan has continuously improved the provincial “One Belt, One Road” construction project reserve. There are 167 key projects in the “Belt and Road” initiative with a total planned investment of over 1.4 trillion yuan. Such a large scale of infrastructure construction provides a broad market space for pine wood, and the demand for pine wood is also rising.

In addition, the continuous improvement of the property market in the western region in recent years has also provided benefits for the popularity of the pine market. According to official statistics, the Chinese housing market in 2018 shows some diversified patterns. The central and western regions became the main sales force, and the sales area of commercial housing increased by nearly 7%.

The industries in China's central and western regions have continued to grow; population movements have begun to decrease, and the situation of the population in the eastern cities has gradually increased to the west. More and more migrant workers and college students in the central and eastern regions have gradually returned to employment in the central and western regions. This has brought many favorable conditions for the development of the property market. The developmental stamina and policy dividends have attracted a large inflow of people and stimulated the development of the local real estate market. The property market is hot, and as pine is indispensable in the construction of commercial housing, the market sales are naturally optimistic.

Chengdu Europe Rail Express - the competitive advantage of the Russian pine

For such a huge demand for wood in Sichuan, the Chengdu Europe Rail Express is undoubtedly the biggest hero!

The Chengdu Europe Rail Express trains not only provided a variety of transportation methods for pine, but more importantly, play a key role in timeliness, safety and logistics costs.

First, the transportation cycle of wood is greatly shortened. Compared with traditional railway and road transportation methods, trains have a more balanced performance in terms of time. For example, at the Rong Ou Express Rail, the total transit time of the train is about 18-20 days, which can be 10 times quicker compared with traditional road transport. It can save 1-3 days compared with traditional railway transportation. Moreover, under the current “One Belt, One Road” strategy, all levels of government have given strong support, which has greatly reduced the transportation cost of pine and saved a lot of transportation costs for customers.

“In the past, after timber harvesting from Russia, the wood was transported to Manzhouli for fumigation treatment, and then transported from Manzhouli to the Chengdu, Sichuan, etc. by rail or road. The wood products needed to be unloaded, fumigated, and replaced. Since the opening of the Chengdu Europe Rail Express, the timber has been fumigated directly in Russia after being harvested, and then directly transported to Chengdu, Sichuan and other places through the Central European train. In addition, in terms of transportation cost, thanks to the subsidies of local governments, the transportation cost of the Chengdu Europe Rail Express can be reduced by about 20% compared with the traditional transportation methods.

As an indispensable material for construction projects, the future development prospects of construction materials such as Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica and white pine have great potential. The macroeconomic policy has clearly shifted in 2019. The focus is on increasing capital investment. The implementation progress of infrastructure projects will be significantly accelerated. It is expected that infrastructure investment will increase by 10% this year, and infrastructure investment will increase to 3.21 trillion yuan, especially in the central and western regions. There are still many shortcomings in the construction of regional infrastructure, and infrastructure still needs to be strengthened. In 2019, there were 700 key projects in Sichuan Province, including 476 projects under construction and 224 new projects, including infrastructure projects and major industries and innovation platform projects. There are four major categories of ecological construction and environmental protection projects, including two airport projects and 10 railway projects. Such a large scale of infrastructure will undoubtedly provide a broad market space for the pine market.

In recent years, the central and western regions have become a hot spot for China’s timber trade investment, and the flow of people, goods, and capital has been concentrated here.
