The seal of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is considered by environmental organizations to be the most demanding international certificate for more responsible forest management.\u00a0A study commissioned by the WWF on the situation in Russia shows that a positive ecological effect is not everywhere: In the areas investigated in the northwest of the country, no significant difference between FSC-certified forests and those without a certificate could be established.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"In the forests studied, regardless of certification, we are dealing with large-scale clearcuts that are difficult for nature to recover.\u00a0This is a worrying finding, \"\u00a0Susanne Winter, Program Director Forest at WWF Germany, said.<\/p>\n

The results of the study indicate that there is no real change in Russia through the FSC label towards more environmentally responsible forest management.\u00a0Clearcuts of up to 50 hectares accept the decline in the ecological functionality of forests, for example as climate protectors or as habitat for animals and plants.\u00a0\"As part of the FSC certification, forest protected areas are established in Russia.\u00a0That is undoubtedly a positive effect.\u00a0However, the study shows that the Russian FSC standard ignores important criteria for sustainable forest management.\u00a0This has to change quickly, otherwise the certificate threatens to lose its credibility.\u00a0The FSC urgently needs to use the current revision of the Russian standard in order to move away from massive deforestation \",<\/p>\n

According to the WWF, the present study is one of the first studies to systematically attempt to compare FSC-certified and non-certified timber harvesting in the boreal forest.\u00a0Responsible was the Center for Econics and Ecosystem Management at the University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde.\u00a0In addition, the WWF as the client, the Northern Arctic Federal University in Arkhangelsk, the State University of Petrozavodsk (both in Russia), the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun (Poland) and the Writtle University College (UK) were involved.<\/p>\n

\"We have clearcuts of two representative companies, each with or without FSC certification managed, as well as a jungle in detail and recorded a variety of environmental indicators,\" says Jeanette Blumr\u00f6der, scientist of the University of sustainable development Eberswalde, the field work and the Analysis has cited.\u00a0\"There are no significant ecological differences because even under the FSC seal virtually all wood biomass is harvested and transported away on the clearcuts\".\u00a0Also number and size of the clear cuts would not be changed under the certification.\u00a0Particularly critical are the consequences for the microclimate of the forests.\u00a0The big clearcuts warmed up very strongly in the summer.<\/p>\n

The Eberswalde conservation professor Pierre Ibisch says as responsible for the study: \"The FSC-certified areas have spread rapidly in Russia.\u00a0The reason is that companies want to gain access to the European market.\u00a0Consumers in Europe buy the FSC-certified wood and believe they are doing something good for the Russian forests.\u00a0Unfortunately we can not confirm this with our case study.\u00a0I think it is irresponsible that the destruction of the last great primeval forests of Russia is progressing under the guise of sustainability. \"<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
