Pulp and sawn timber production in Finland increased during the first quarter of the year.\u00a0On the other hand, the production volumes of paper, board and plywood were lower compared to January-March of the previous year.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

In January \u2013 March, strong growth continued also in sawn timber production, as its production volume rose to 3.0 million cubic meters.\u00a0Compared to the previous year, 2.9 per cent.<\/p>\n

In January \u2013 March, the pulp industry produced 2.1 million tonnes.\u00a0The figure was 6.3 per cent more than in the corresponding period last year,\u00a0according to the statistics of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation.<\/p>\n

\u201cProduction grew specifically in volume products, although the forecasts for the declining growth in the global economy have increased,\u201d says Timo Jaatinen, Managing Director of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith political decisions, Finland should not start to limit the success of the forest industry, especially now that there is a willingness to invest in the industry.\u00a0The next government should encourage additional use of forests, secure a competitive supply of energy and ensure the financing of traffic information, says Jaatinen.<\/p>\n

In the forest industry, megatrends were reflected, such as the middle-ranking of emerging countries, the growth of individual economies and urbanization.\u00a0Wood-based products can increasingly replace products that use fossil raw materials.\u00a0On the other hand, demand for printing and writing paper is weakening in Europe, North America and Asia.<\/p>\n

Finland's total production volume of paper in January \u2013 March was 1.6 million tonnes.\u00a0This is 6.1 per cent less than in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.\u00a0The invoice included production volumes for both printing and writing papers and other papers.<\/p>\n

Cardboard production in the first quarter was less than one million tonnes, up 0.9 million tonnes.\u00a0This is 1.8 per cent less than in the first quarter of 2018.<\/p>\n

The January-March figures for plywood production show a 3.5% drop compared to last year's production.\u00a0The production volume in January \u2013 March was 0.3 million cubic meters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
