Ghana's government has placed a total ban on the harvesting, processing and export of rosewood with immediate effect.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has directed the Forestry Commission to stop processing export permits for rosewood.<\/p>\n

The Ministry has indicated that \u2018salvage permits\u2019 would be issued for rosewood log stocks. Kwaku Asomah Cheremeh, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, said the ban was to eliminate illegal activities that were endangering the species, especially in northern Ghana.<\/p>\n

The minister said the illegal felling of rosewood had become an environmental threat and appealed to the public to report any illegal activities.<\/p>\n

In 2014 the export of rosewood was banned but later a few companies secured the right to trade previously felled logs but the system was abused. The Minister reported that a taskforce has been created to assess rosewood exploitation and provide recommendations to effectively enforce the ban.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
