The "Top five "of the European ranking are: Germany (12.4 Mtep), France (10.8 Mtep), Sweden (9.3 Mtep), Italy (9 Mtep) and Finland (8.6 Mtoe). All self-sufficient in the production of biomass, except Italy and Germany, which import 1.3 and 0.4 Mtep respectively.

The most virtuous countries in the use of solid biomass for the generation of electricity, or those where only cogeneration is used, are: Sweden, Poland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Croatia and Luxembourg. UK is instead the first producer of electricity from biomass, but 100% of its production takes place by wasting heat, for the simple reason that biomass is used to replace coal in old power plants, which was preferred to convert rather than dismantle.

Sweden, Denmark and Finland have enacted laws to eliminate coal-fired electricity generation by 2030. Furthermore, Sweden wants to reach the quadrature of the circle: to increase the percentage of forest biomass used for cogeneration, and at the same time, increase the quantity of carbon immobilized in the forests, through a (more) rational management, and increase of the forest surface, also with reforestation projects abroad. The Swedish government has the general objective of achieving the carbon neutrality of the entire nation by 2045.

The countries with the highest per capita consumption of biomass are: Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, followed by Denmark, Austria and Lithuania almost ex aequo for fifth place.

As for the direct consumption of biomass for domestic heating, Germany is in the first place (9.24 Mtoe), followed by France (8.65 Mtoe) and Italy (6.9 Mtoe)

Future developments

The IEA (International Energy Agency) estimates that in 2020 the consumption of solid biomass in the EU will reach 81 Mtoe of direct heat, with more than 15 Mtoe of heat coming from the district heating networks. It is expected that in the future the main increase in the consumption of solid biomass for direct heat production will come from the cement sector.

The study of the IEA does not consider the recent Danish conversion policies biomass coal plants today, nor the Dutch coal partial replacement by biomass - a technique known as co-firing policies - neither the Swedish investments in new cogeneration plants in biomass.

During 2017 the company Cortus energy AB has inaugurated a forest waste gasification module with a capacity of 6 MW, which will supply syngas to the Höganäs steelworks (Sweden), to replace natural gas. It has been possible to overcome the main obstacle that held back this technology, the lowering of steel quality, caused by the impurities of the syngas, for which it is expected that in the future other steel mills could adopt the system, further pushing up the demand for solid biomass.

The wood pellet sector, after the introduction of the certification mechanisms of the origin and sustainability of the supply chain, has undertaken the extension of the same EN Plus pellet certification mechanisms also with wood chips. The future system will be called "GoodChips" and will define eight qualities of wood chips and four wood chips chips. The quality parameters will be humidity, grain size and ash, together with sustainability parameters, such as the producer's greenhouse gas emissions. Simultaneously, the EPC (European pellet council ) is reviewing the quality and sustainability specifications of the pellets defined in the EN Plus standard, a process that is expected to end in December 2019.

According to the recently released Eurobarometer, in 2017 the European solid biomass sector came close to 100 Mtep (Million tons of oil equivalent) of primary energy, deriving from wood, wood chips, pellets, black liquor from the paper industry and lignocellulosic … Continue reading →

[4716,4715
3295,3299,3410
post-77295","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends","category-market-analysis","tag-biomass","tag-europe","tag-sector","topic-wood-energy","area-europe

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
