On February 27th and 28th, 2019, the European Pellets Conference which took place in Wels, Austria gathered around 660 participants.\u00a0As always, there was an overview of the global pellet markets.\u00a0Europe is characterized by rising production and a simultaneous fear of supply shortages.\u00a0North America is focusing more on East Asia's export of pellets.<\/em><\/p>\n

Didzis Palejs from the Latvian Biomass Association gave an overview of the Baltic wood pellet markets.\u00a0The past two years have been very volatile, and the development is very hard to predict.\u00a0<\/span>After a drastic price increase for wood pellets, the prices are now again in free fall.\u00a0Due to warm winters, the consumption of pellets dropped.\u00a0In addition, consumers, both private and industrial, are better prepared for the heating season.\u00a0Due to the so far high pellet prices in the Baltic States, a large amount of ENplus pellets, which should actually go to Central Europe, are unsold.\u00a0They are likely to be delivered in large part and at low prices to industrial customers.<\/p>\n

And production will continue to rise.\u00a0For example, Stora Enso announced in early 2020 a new pellet plant at the Launkalne site in Latvia with a capacity of 60,000 tonnes.\u00a0There are also increased imports, especially from Belarus.\u00a0On the raw materials side, the market for pellet manufacturers in the Baltic States is relaxing.\u00a0The industrial wood price rose to unprecedented record highs in 2018 and is now in free fall.<\/p>\n

For the future, the timber industry in the Baltic States fears stronger restrictions.\u00a0Thus, an NGO has collected 50,000 signatures against clear cuts in the state forest.\u00a0In particular, the Baltic biomass industry fears the cessation of subsidies for the biomass heating systems.\u00a0The recovery of already paid subsidies is in sight, said Palejs.\u00a0If these restrictions are implemented, pellet production will probably shift more towards Russia and Finland, where there is still great potential.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
