Forestry prices in New Zealand \u2014 one of the world\u2019s largest timber exporters \u2014 are near record highs, thanks largely to strong Chinese demand for pine logs. A-grade logs for export were recently selling for $NZ140 ($134) a tonne, up around 14 per cent from September, according to market data provider AgriHQ.<\/em><\/p>\n

In contrast, US futures contracts for lumber \u2014 or planks of timber \u2014 fell sharply in the second half of last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

That drop was the result of a cooling US housing market, slower construction activity as well as sharply lower US wood exports to China. US timber prices have ticked higher this year, but are still down about 25 per cent from May 2018.<\/p>\n

New Zealand has been a big beneficiary of China\u2019s construction and infrastructure projects. The Pacific island nation exported $US2.8 billion ($39bn) of logs and sawed products last year and about 70 per cent went to the world\u2019s second-largest economy.<\/p>\n

New Zealand was the first developed country to sign a free-trade agreement with China back in 2008, and it benefits from lower tariffs than competitors on many goods.<\/p>\n

US-China trade tensions over the past year also contributed to China\u2019s increased appetite for New Zealand\u2019s logs. \u201cTheir normal channels out of the US have not been there, and so we\u2019ve been doing quite well,\u201d said David Rhodes, chief executive of New Zealand\u2019s Forestry Owners Association.<\/p>\n

But some analysts are warning that the good times may not last for long as China\u2019s economic growth is slowing.<\/p>\n

Global demand for logs is also flagging, because of weaker growth in housing starts and moderating global growth. \u201cNew Zealand is unlikely to be immune\u201d from that broader trend for long, said Nathan Penny, a senior economist at ASB Bank in New Zealand.<\/p>\n

Like in the US, farmers and forestry owners in New Zealand planted large numbers of trees in the 1990s in anticipation of higher global demand for wood.Many of those trees are now ready to be felled, raising concerns about oversupply, but China\u2019s demand is helping to ease that worry, said Mr Rhodes.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
