Not even pellet furnaces (stoves and central heating systems) were not installed in the extent hoped for by the industry, reports the German Energy Wood and Pellet Association (DEPV) in its annual report. Sales of 33,000 pellet boilers only exceeded the previous year's result by just under 3 percent. Nonetheless, the energy source of wood pellets is experiencing increasing demand in Germany. With more than 2.4 million tons (t) in 2018, more wood pellets were produced in this country than ever before - and this on the basis of a broad, domestic supply of residual wood from the sawmills. 2.13 million tons of this were consumed in about 460,000 domestic pellet furnaces, and the surplus was exported.

Production and consumption of wood pellets in Germany

Wood pellets are suitable for Germany. The largest Central European wood stock in the forests and the highest sawmill density offers a large amount of wood shavings and wood chips for the pellets, which are produced during sawing as so-called sawtooth wood. On this basis, 2.415 million t of wood pellets were produced here in 2018. Compared to the previous year (2.25 million t), this represents an increase of 7.3 percent. Ten years ago, the value was just under 1.5 million t. The pellets produced in Germany are almost completely certified according to the EN plus certification system, with 98 per cent being in the premium class EN plus A1. Two-thirds of the pellets consumed in Germany are now also being used by EN pluscertified fuel trade. The wood pellets are used nationwide from the pellet stove over the heating in one- and two-family house, larger housing, commercial and municipal buildings, to process heat generation, for example in food production or pharmaceutical industry. Consumption in 2018 nationwide amounted to 2.1 million t. Just under a quarter of German pellet production (22.4 percent) is filled into sacks and used for pellet stoves in Germany or neighboring countries.

As a country with the highest sawmill density in Europe and the associated accumulation of residual timber, Germany is also an international leader in pellet production. Almost 8 percent of the world's pressed wood pellets are produced here, which is the leading position in Europe. For the current year DEPV expects a moderate rise in pellet production to 2.5 million t.

Market for pellet firing in Germany

With approx. 33,200 pellet firing units sold domestically exceeded the previous year's result (32,300) by almost 3 per cent. In particular, 18,000 pellet stoves, 14,500 pellet boilers and water-bearing pellet stoves with a capacity of up to 50 kW and 725 boilers / pellet CHP units larger than 50 kW were added. In total, pellet firing in this way in 2018 nationwide approx. 10.5 terawatt hours of final energy were made available, which accounted for about 6 percent of renewable energy in the heating sector or just under 1 percent of total heat consumption in Germany.

"We are not satisfied with that," explained DEPV Managing Director Martin Bentele: "The share of renewable energies in the heating market is approx. 14 percent generally too low. The political measures for the energy turnaround in the building sector are ineffective, because local people are not reached with this topic. The modern wood energy in the form of pellets, that is, automatic, efficient systems that use a high-quality and clean energy source comfortable and low-emission, are field-tested and could achieve a much higher share.

"Nevertheless, Bentele was confident about the medium-term development," because For the economic implementation of the energy turnaround you will not get past the widely available, cheap and with high climate protection related pellet firing! " For the year 2019, DEPV expects the addition of pellet boilers to increase by almost 1,600 to 34,800 units (compared to around 33,200 in 2018), of which roughly half are pellet stoves each.

Stable pellet price

The price for pellets was as usual in the year 2018 stable and cheap. On an annual average, heating operators paid EUR 247.39 for one tonne of pellets, equivalent to 4.95 ct / kWh. This was 3.15 per cent more than in the previous year, but 9.3 per cent less than in 2013. Heating oil was at an average of 7.01 ct / kWh in 2018, 41.7 per cent more expensive than wood pellets, gas averaging 5.92 ct / kWh 19.6 percent more expensive.

The energy turnaround in the heating market is still not progressing in Germany, as the only moderate increase in renewable energy in 2018 shows.
