{"id":77066,"date":"2019-02-11T12:48:29","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T12:48:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/japan-aims-boost-imports-wood-pellets-canada\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T08:49:53","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:49:53","slug":"japan-aims-boost-imports-wood-pellets-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/japan-aims-boost-imports-wood-pellets-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan aims to boost imports of wood pellets from Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p><em>Japan is studying the potential for a seismic increase in wood pellet imports from western Canada \u2013 especially from British Columbia.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has engaged the Japanese Coal Energy Center (JCOAL) to examine the business case for increasing wood pellet co-firing with coal from the current level of two per cent, up to 20 per cent, resulting in a potential annual demand of 30 million metric tonnes of wood pellets, worth some $6 billion a year. Japan prefers Canada as a supply source due to our country\u2019s reputation for high quality, reliable supply and strong sustainability credentials.<\/p>\n<div class=\"itemFullText\"><strong>In the course of their investigation, JCOAL representatives were examining:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the expected impact on greenhouse gas and other noxious emissions<\/li>\n<li>the technical impacts on power plant combustion and performance<\/li>\n<li>Canadian raw material supply, forestry regulations, and sustainability<\/li>\n<li>the ability of the Canadian transportation network \u2013 roads, rail and ports \u2013 to handle the expected traffic increase<\/li>\n<li>willingness of Canadian companies to ramp up production<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over a four-day period from Jan. 28 to 31, the Wood Pellet Association of Canada (WPAC) hosted JCOAL representatives in Canada. The program included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>visits to the University of British Columbia (UBC) where we met with professors and scientists from the faculties of forestry and engineering;<\/li>\n<li>a half-day seminar at the offices of the BC Ministry of Jobs, Trade and Technology (JTT) that included representatives of JTT, WPAC producer-members, terminal operators, CN Rail, Sumitomo, and UBC;<\/li>\n<li>a forest management presentation from Canfor and a tour of the company\u2019s seedling nursery; and<\/li>\n<li>visits to pellet plants near Prince George.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"section-title\"><\/h2>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Japan is studying the potential for a seismic increase in wood pellet imports from western Canada \u2013 especially from British Columbia.
