In 2011, Mets\u00e4hallitus (a Finnish state enterprise, which administers state-owned land) filed a claim for damages against UPM,\u00a0Mets\u00e4 and Stora Enso. The claim relates to the decision of December 2009 in which the Finnish Market Court held that the defendants had breached competition rules in the Finnish roundwood market.<\/em><\/p>\n

On 21 May 2018, Helsinki Court of Appeal rejected the damages claim of Mets\u00e4hallitus and ordered Mets\u00e4hallitus to pay compensation for legal expenses. Mets\u00e4hallitus requested leave to appeal from the Supreme Court. The principal amount of Mets\u00e4hallitus claim was in total Euro 61.8 million, of which Euro 3 million is based on agreements between UPM and Mets\u00e4hallitus.<\/p>\n

The Finnish Supreme Court announced this week that it did not grant Mets\u00e4hallitus leave to appeal, as a result of which the judgment of the Court of Appeal remains final.<\/p>\n

Back in June 2016, the same court\u00a0rejected the Mets\u00e4hallitus\u2019 claim for damages against Stora Enso Oyj, Mets\u00e4liitto Cooperative and UPM-Kymmene Oyj. Mets\u00e4hallitus\u00a0claimed that the three companies were<\/span>\u00a0involved in a competition infringement found on the raw wood market competition by the Finnish Market Court in its decision on 3 December 2009. The claim stated that Mets\u00e4hallitus suffered damages due to the restriction of competition.<\/p>\n

As the court file specified and according to Mets\u00e4hallitus, the companies had purchased\u00a0roundwood from Mets\u00e4hallitus below market prices during 1997\u20132005.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
