The output of plywood imports to Europe showed an important improvement in the first nine months of 2018. In value, imports grew by 5%, from the same period of 2017, with the top three sources of plywood showing mixed results: imports from Russia rose sharply by 13% (see table below); those from China only slightly by 3%, while those from Brazil went up by 28%. Indonesia and Chile were on the 4th and 5th place in the top 5 EU plywood imports countries.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

It seems that the European appetite for Russian plywood is continuing its growing pace as in last years, mostly\u00a0due to the weakness of the Russian rouble against the euro and other EU currencies. A third of the Russian birch plywood goes to Germany, Latvia and Italy.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The three countries reported gains in imports of Russian plywood as follows: Germany +16% with a total of\u00a0\u20ac73 million; Latvia +21% and\u00a0\u20ac33 million worth of imports; and Italy with a +6% and a total of\u00a0\u20ac26 million<\/p>\n

Chinese plywood supply is reported by EU importers to be disrupted by tough new national environmental controls, which are forcing mills to interrupt production to upgrade or replace emission and waste treatment technology. Most of the Chinese plywood goes to the UK: imports in Jan.-Sep. 2018 grew by 2% (at a value of\u00a0\u20ac<\/span>124 million) as compared to the same period last year. Belgium comes second with imports worth\u00a0\u20ac<\/span>25 million (and a sharp drop increase of -24%, year-over-year).<\/p>\n

EU plywood imports from Brazil reported the biggest growth. With an increase of\u00a0\u20ac50 million or +28%, Brazil is now closer to China and threatening its second place. Most of the Brazilian plywood went to the UK, Germany and Belgium, each with a considerable growth in imports as compared to last year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
