In close cooperation with the forest owners, the storm wood and beetle wood is collected and processed.

However, the supply of high-quality fresh wood, which is still needed by sawmills, is becoming increasingly critical.

The German sawmill industry can look back on a good first half of the year overall, supported by satisfactory sales in the most important markets. In view of the oversupply of wood damaged by calamities, the further prospects are dulled. The sawmill industry sees a great challenge in continuing to take up such quantities of damaged timber and to sell it competitively on the various markets, above all the global export markets.

Split market in round timber

Due to the felling stop arranged in many regions, the supply situation with fresh wood in Germany is now very tense - the round timber quality is also declining due to superposition and the beetle wood is now being added to the storm wood. Assortments with lower visual requirements have recently been increasingly produced and are therefore under price pressure.

Especially many smaller companies are in extreme distress due to the bad supply of fresh wood. The lower qualities, more mass-produced goods and smaller assortments, are becoming increasingly difficult to sell on the market.

Wood with blue stain or beetle damage cannot be used for a large number of sawn timber assortments, especially for interior finishing.

Increasing cutting of softwood is necessary for the rapid processing of the timber resulting from calamities

The heavy accrual of timber from calamities forces the sawmills to cut the wood quickly. In the 1st quarter, softwood sawn timber production expanded by 4.6%. The production of unplaned goods increased by 2.8 %, of planed goods by 13.1 %.

In the following months, the cut was further adjusted with the increasing amount of timber from calamities, the production index in the first half of the year was 5.8 % higher than in the previous year.

After the high amount of damaged timber from various windthrows and the subsequent problem of beetle wood, the sawmills focus on the rapid pick-up and processing of the wood produced, in order to avoid further devaluation of the wood.
