During the last year, raw material supply in Sweden has been restricted somewhat by different factors. After a rainy autumn, more snow than normally hampered the supply during the winter. Dry conditions this summer will probably also restrict the raw material supply somewhat during the fall. Increased competition with the expanding pulp industry has also influenced the supply negatively, as well as shortages in transport capacity.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Therefore, the first seven months of 2018 the Swedish production was only unchanged compared with the same period last year. During the rest of the year, the production activity will continue at about the same pace as last year. Thus, the total production is forecast to be 18.3 million m3, or unchanged compared to last year. Given relatively unchanged market conditions it is reasonable to believe the production will increase marginally to 18.7 million m3 in 2019.<\/p>\n

Since October last year, the Swedish Krona has depreciated against most currencies.<\/p>\n

The Swedish domestic market<\/strong><\/p>\n

With a softwood consumption of 5.6 million cubic meters Sweden is the single largest market for the Swedish sawmills. Demand has been driven by strong housing activity for a couple of years. Housing starts climbed last year to its highest level since the early nineties (even though most of the increase in building activity has been on flats) and reached 71.000 units. The repair and maintenance activity remain on a stable level.<\/p>\n

It seems like a peak in housing starts was reached last year, and the activity is now decreasing from a high level. On the other hand, the share of multi storey houses build with wood is now increasing. For example, several investments in CLT-production is now under way in Sweden.<\/p>\n

The Swedish export markets<\/strong><\/p>\n

The total exported volume of sawn and planed softwood decreased two per cent during the first half of 2018 compared with last year.<\/p>\n

The development differs quite much from one market to another. Volumes have increased on important European markets such as The Netherlands (+8% January-June), Denmark (+5%) and Poland (+9%). The Norwegian and German markets have shown a more modest development with slightly lower volumes. Exports to UK, Sweden\u2019s largest export market, decreased by 3% during the first half year. Total export volumes to European markets were unchanged up to June.<\/p>\n

Swedish exports to non-European markets have decreased somewhat. China decreased 14% and Japan 11%. Egypt decreased as much as 30% during January to June, compared with last year.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
