A bark beetle infestation is currently ravaging forests in Central and some Northern European countries. Reports from Germany, The Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden show that the volumes infested are in some countries or regions twice or even three times higher than some previous estimates for this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Germania<\/strong><\/p>\n

The German region of Thuringia currently expects around 600,000 m3 of beetle wood for the entire 2018. According to information from Thuringia Forest Office, the new addition of freshly infested beetle wood in August alone amounted to 230,000 m3.<\/p>\n

The main area of \u200b\u200bconcern is the spruce-rich east of Thuringia.\u00a0In addition, there is a large problem in the west, in the forestry departments Marksuhl and Bad Salzungen, which were the hardest hit by the storm Irenaeus.<\/p>\n

In August and September a wide spread of the bark beetle infestation was reported in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.\u00a0After initial reports in the Eifel and Sauerland, the infestation spread to the entire region in August and has since then continued. In North Rhine-Westphalia, around one million cubic meters of beetle wood are expected for the year as a whole.<\/p>\n

The Czech Republic<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week, the Czech Minister of Agriculture Miroslav Toman informed the government about the bark beetle situation in the country.\u00a0So far, it has been assumed that around 10-12 million m3 of beetle wood have been infested. However, in view of recent developments, the estimate for the entire year has been raised to 15-20 million m3.\u00a0Toman presented a control strategy against the bark beetle for 2019 and expects it to cost several billion Czech crowns.<\/p>\n

In 2016, 4 million cubic meters of bark beetle infested wood were reported in the Czech Republic, compared with 6 million cubic meters in 2017.<\/p>\n

Now, logging might be ceased for an entire year to relieve the timber market.\u00a0For this purpose, the Forest Act is to be amended in an urgent procedure.\u00a0By mid-November, the development of the bark beetle infestation should be closely monitored to provide the basis for an effective 2019 control.\u00a0By the end of the year, crisis management plans should be at national and regional level.\u00a0Toman is even considering a state of emergency on a territorial basis in order to use \"all available forces and resources\".\u00a0This measure might be necessary towards the end of March or April 2019, at the beginning of the new beetle season.<\/p>\n

The Ministry plans to increase the forestry budget by CZK 650 million in 2019, of which CZK 200 million will be used for the reforestation of the bark beetle areas.<\/p>\n

Switzerland<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since the beginning of August, a large increase in the beetle wood volumes has been observed in Switzerland.\u00a0Currently, a lot of beetle wood comes on the market.\u00a0Above all, the German-speaking regions of Switzerland are affected.\u00a0The reported volumes exceed the previous estimates significantly.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of 2018, in addition to the volumes of wood resulted from the storm Burglind, beetle wood is coming in larger quantities.\u00a0The warehouses are overcrowded, and the Swiss sawmills massively oversupplied.\u00a0Due to the weather conditions, significantly less beetle wood is produced in the western Mittelland and in Romandie.\u00a0As long as it stays warm and dry, a further increase of the bark beetle infestation must be expected..<\/p>\n

Sweden<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to estimates of the Swedish forestry and timber company S\u00f6dra, about 1.5 million cubic meters of spruce are affected by a bark beetle infestation in the southern Swedish province of G\u00f6taland.\u00a0In its own forests, the company has identified around 750,000 m3 of trees infested.\u00a0About half of the forests in G\u00f6taland belong to the S\u00f6dra Group.<\/p>\n

The hardest hit is the southeast of the province, explains Olof Hansson, head of S\u00f6dra Skog.\u00a0In the west of G\u00f6taland, the extent of the beetle damage is in the normal range.<\/p>\n

The company emphasizes that these are only preliminary surveys and that the amount of wood infested is likely to increase.<\/p>\n

Austria<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Austrian softwood roundwood market is extremely tense due to the bark beetle damaged areas.\u00a0Rising beetle wood volumes at home and abroad and maintenance shutdowns over the summer have again increased the waiting time for the removal of the wood from forests for several weeks.<\/p>\n

The price for C quality logs in the beetle areas in Upper and Lower Austria is at a lower level, with a maximum of 50 EUR \/ m3.\u00a0Outside the beetle infested areas the price reaches 60 EUR \/ m3.\u00a0Above all, outside of the calamity areas, there is a noticeable increase in the demand for freshly logged wood, which, however, is not yet reflected in the price.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
