In view of the good industry situation, sales growth for the whole of 2018 for the German wood industry is also expected to increase by up to 3%.

The wood industry mainly consists of the wood industry and the furniture industry. Here, the turnover of the wood industry in the first half of 2018 grew significantly by 5.2% to € 8.6 billion. The furniture industry grew by 1% to € 9.1 billion. The growth of the furniture industry almost exclusively came from the successful export business. Domestic furniture sales stagnated.

The timber industry also profited from the good international business, but was also able to gain slightly inland as well. Construction activity is an important factor for almost all segments of the timber industry, as most companies are directly or indirectly dependent on the construction industry. They build, supply building materials and floor coverings or set up the finished living space. After the boom of the past years, building permits are currently declining, only in multi-family housing are currently registered increases. According to Schwörer, this has different effects on the individual segments of the timber industry:

Against the background of the cooling construction activity, the sales increase in the largest subsegment of the wood industry slowed down in the year to date: the construction- related area . This includes the manufacturers of prefabricated houses, windows, doors, stairs and other wood-based components. Turnover in the construction-related sector of the wood industry rose slightly by 2.1% to around € 2.8 billion. In the parquet industry , companies with more than 50 employees posted sales growth of 1.2% to around € 140 million.

The second largest segment of the wood industry - the wood-based panel industry - posted a 2.5% increase in sales to around € 2.5 billion. The sawmill industry recorded a significant increase in sales of 7.8% to € 2.4 billion. In the wood packaging sector , official figures show a rise by 29.9% to around € 470 million. Although this industry is indeed doing very well, official sales figures in this segment are significantly oversubscribed by statistical re-groupings of companies at the beginning of the year, according to the HDH.

The export business of the entire wood industry developed very positively from January to June 2018. Foreign sales increased by 6% compared to the first half of 2017. The industrial export quota - this is the share of sales generated by companies producing in Germany abroad - increased in the first half of 2018 to 30.2% (same period of the previous year: 29.4%). Above all, the furniture industry with an industrial export rate of 32.6% has made a significant contribution to this positive overall result. The export quota in the timber industry is at a low level of 26.3%.

In the first half of 2018, the German timber industry employed a total of 154,455 men and women in 935 companies with 50 or more employees. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of companies increased by 0.4%, while the number of employees increased by 2.5% - equivalent to 3,700 new jobs.

The German wood industry is growing
