Japanese wood exports are booming again due to higher demand in Asia, and mostly from China. In 2017, Japanese exports reached\u00a032.6 billion yen ($293 million), up\u00a037% from the previous year and the\u00a0highest in 40 years.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Japanese\u00a0forestry industry\u00a0sees growing Asian markets\u00a0as having much more\u00a0untapped potential<\/span>, Nikkei Asian Review (NASR) reported.<\/p>\n

\"The Chinese market needs high quality wood\u00a0to accompany its economic growth.\u00a0Japanese wood has advantages over\u00a0that of competitors in\u00a0North America, Europe and Oceania, both in terms of geographic proximity\u00a0and quality,\" said Jiang Jian, director of a wood trading\u00a0company in China's Jiangsu Province, as quoted by NASR<\/p>\n

\u00a0On July 5, Jiang outlined Chinese wood needs to the Japanese forestry industry\u00a0at a seminar in Kagoshima City, with\u00a0around 60 people paying\u00a0close attention. Such events to match buyers from markets such as South Korea, Taiwan\u00a0and Vietnam are regularly held by the Japan Wood Products Export Association, an\u00a0industry group.<\/div>\n

In 2017,\u00a0Japanese wood exports totaled\u00a032.6 billion yen, the second highest figure after\u00a036.6 billion yen in 1977. Last year's figure was buoyed by Chinese\u00a0demand, with exports to the country reaching\u00a014.5 billion yen,\u00a061% above\u00a0the previous year. The\u00a0figure has risen seven-fold in five\u00a0years.<\/p>\n

China uses Japanese\u00a0wood for building\u00a0and\u00a0packing materials. Some wood\u00a0is reexported to the U.S. after it has been fashioned into fencing for private homes, Nikkey reported.<\/p>\n

Trading\u00a0companies such as the subsidiaries of\u00a0Nippon Paper\u00a0and\u00a0Oji Holdings\u00a0play\u00a0a important role in\u00a0exporting Japanese wood products. Some trading\u00a0companies export\u00a0wood from their own forests or other\u00a0private forests, and some bid to export wood from Japan's national forests.<\/p>\n

Four decades ago, Japan nearly ran out of wood because of heavy\u00a0demand both at home\u00a0and abroad. In the\u00a0past 10 years, however, forest resources have\u00a0recovered.\u00a0Japan has set a\u00a0goal\u00a0to export an annual total of\u00a01 trillion yen of\u00a0food, agricultural, forestry and fishery products.<\/p>\n

The market should get another tailwind on\u00a0Aug. 1 when China introduces new\u00a0building laws,\u00a0accepting Japanese timber framing methods and allowing the\u00a0use of Japanese trees such as cedar and cypress.<\/p>\n
