Demand for Indian imported logs continues unchanged but imports are still affected by the withdrawal of credit facilities. Another factor impacting imports has been the weakness of the rupee.<\/em><\/p>\n

The rupee has fallen against the US dollar by around 5% over the past month making imports more expensive. Analysts write that \u201cunder these circumstances any rise in C&F prices is ruled out\u201d. The trade feels that the normal banking facilities could be restored by the end of July.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prices for locally sawn imported hardwoods<\/strong><\/p>\n

Traders are under pressure from suppliers to raise prices\u00a0but say this is not possible because of stiff competition\u00a0amongst traders who are offering alternative timbers\u00a0coming from Guyana and Gabon for example.<\/p>\n

As is usual, consumers look at price and what is suitable\u00a0for the end-uses and are less inclined to follow tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Myanmar teak prices<\/strong><\/p>\n

The consensus in the trade is that more and more end-users\u00a0are moving away from using Myanmar teak as they\u00a0find cheaper alternate species good enough for their\u00a0purpose.<\/p>\n

The trading patterns are changing with teak and gurjan\u00a0slipping into the history book because of delivery issues\u00a0and prices compared to alternatives.<\/p>\n

Gurjan is being replaced by peeler quality logs from\u00a0Guyana and imports of okoume veneers have encouraged\u00a0some factories to switch completely over to new source.<\/p>\n

Indian companies are expanding veneer production in\u00a0Gabon.<\/p>\n

However, Indian end-users still equate red colored\u00a0veneer with strength which has driven some millers to\u00a0using pigments to color pale imported veneers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
