Italy\u2019s rise in timber imports in 2017 is a key indicator of the sector\u2019s recovery. Overall, Italy\u2019s wood and wood furniture imports increased 1.8% to \u20ac4.6 billion in 2017. Imports from within the EU increased 2.3% to \u20ac3.53 billion and imports from outside the EU increased by 0.2% to 1.06 billion.<\/em><\/p>\n

Italy\u2019s imports also picked up pace in the first quarter of 2018, rising 8.9% to \u20ac1.22 billion, increasing 9.9% from inside the EU and 5.9% from outside the EU.<\/p>\n

One market driver in Italy is an upswing in the housing sector since 2017, which resulted in rising imports of sawn timber, wood flooring, and joinery products.<\/p>\n

While the signs in Italy are encouraging, the recovery has yet to extend to tropical wood. Imports from the largest suppliers of tropical timber into Italy \u2013 Cameroon and Indonesia \u2013 fell during 2017.<\/p>\n

Italian imports from Brazil increased, but this was mainly plantation softwood plywood rather than tropical hardwood.<\/p>\n

From within the EU, there was a significant increase in imports from Austria, Italy\u2019s largest external wood supplier, together with Poland and Slovenia.<\/p>\n

Much of the recent gain in Italian imports from outside the EU has comprised furniture from China \u2013 which may be seen as a negative by Italy\u2019s large and still dominant domestic furniture sector \u2013 together with sawnwood from Ukraine and birch plywood from Russia.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
