Swedish sawmills and wood-processing companies are operating at high activity levels due to a high demand on the global market.\u00a0In 2017, total global production of wood products increased to a record high of 335 million cubic metres.<\/em><\/p>\n

Johan Freij,\u00a0President of Danske Bank Forestry & Farming, explained to Swedish media that the high demand is largely driven by the Chinese market. World record in timber production also shows an increasingly strong economic climate around the world, and it is mainly Chinese imports that drive production increases.<\/p>\n

Swedish sawmills confirm that all forestry markets are performing well and thus, successive price increases can be achieved. This has given the set for\u00a0higher prices\u00a0in timber in most parts of the country, which also increases the production for\u00a0Swedish forest owners.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, demand for pinewood has been greatly reduced by the decrease in construction in southern European countries. This has only been partly offset by increased exports to countries in northern Africa.<\/p>\n

Freij further says that sawmills should try to offset the low pine wood demand by focusing more on niche products such as cross-laminated wood.<\/p>\n

Just over a year ago there was a huge shift in the average price for spruce\u00a0in Sweden, and this spring the difference in price in southern Sweden between spruce and pine timber was of\u00a0113 SEK (EUR 11.56), or 24%, to the advantage of spruce.
