Chinese Hengan International has bought the largest share in Finnpulp, a Finnish company that is going to build a EUR 1.4 billion pulp mill in Finland. The plant in located in Kuopio and is due to start operations in 2020.<\/em><\/p>\n

Hengan International\u00a0is one of several<\/span>\u00a0Chinese businesses that have recently taken stakes in the Finland\u2019s recovering forest industry, a key sector for its economy.\u00a0The Finnish forest industry is recovering from a long slump as online publishing hit demand for paper. Several paper plants had to close and thousands of jobs were axed, Reuters reported.\u00a0The final investment decision has yet to be signed.<\/p>\n

Finnpulp\u2019s plant will have an annual capacity of 1.2 million tonnes\u00a0of long-fiber pulp and is\u00a0one of several new Finnish plants in the pipeline.<\/p>\n

The Chinese company announced that it will invest EUR 12 million in the planning of the project, getting 36.5% stake in the project and having the option to increase this stake at 49%.<\/p>\n

Other owners include the Finnish Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners as well as local investment firm Grizzly Hill.<\/div>\n

The paper market continues to decline in Europe, but pulp made from northern spruce and pine has a brighter outlook because it is needed for tissue and packaging board, with growing demand from China in particular, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n

In 2017, Metsa Fiber invested EUR 1 billion in a pulp mill in Finland, making the company to become the largest softwood pulp seller in the world. Also, last month,\u00a0Boreal Bioref announced that\u00a0China\u2019s Shanying Paper is about to\u00a0take a majority stake in its planned 950 million euro pulp mill<\/p>\n

According to Reuters,\u00a0Sunshine Kaidi New Energy Group has been planning an EUR 1 billion biodiesel plant in northern Finland, but that project has been put on hold.<\/div>\n
