UK's Hardwood Dimensions (Holdings) Ltd was fined\u00a0 \u00a34,000 for breaching regulations prohibiting the importing and sale of illegally harvested timber. The\u00a0British timber operator\u00a0failed to check the legality of a batch of timber from Cameroon when placing it on the market.<\/em><\/p>\n

The fine marked the first enforcement action carried out by the Government\u2019s new Office for Product Safety and Standards since its establishment earlier this year, TTJ Online reported.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The company breached the regulations requiring businesses trading in timber and timber products in the UK to ensure that their products originate from legal sources.\u00a0Hardwood Dimensions pleaded guilty at the first hearing at the\u00a0Manchester Magistrates Court.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new Office for Product Safety and Standards strengthens the UK\u2019s already tough product safety and enforcement rules and today\u2019s decision by the court sends a powerful message to companies that they need to ensure any products they sell originate from legitimate sources<\/em>,\u201d said business minister Andrew Griffiths.<\/p>\n
