At the same time, the larch pulp logs sales went up by 12%, reaching 405,000 m3, while Siberian and Far East spruce pulp logs reached 522,000 m3, up by 7%, during the mentioned period.

As WhatWood reported, Russia is the only supplier of softwood logs, which reduces sales to China. New Zealand increased supplies in 2017 by 17%, to 14 million 3, the US increased supplies by 11%, reaching 5 million m3, while Australia increased sales by 31%, to 4.3 million m3. The share of Russian unprocessed timber in China market in 2017 was 26%, while in 2011, this share was 45%, with a volume of about 14 million m3.

The decrease in Russian roundwood exports happened because of the growth in demand for wood raw materials on the domestic market after the large Siberian sawmills (LDK Igirma, 2014; TSLK, 2015; PLPK, 2016; Siblesproekt, 2016; Kraslesinvest, 2017) reached their designed capacity and the Chinese industry reoriented on roundwood coming from southern latitudes, especially from New Zealand (China's largest softwood supplier).

At the same time, the exports of hardwood logs from Russia to China went up by 23% during 2017, while the birch veneer logs sales increased by the same percentage, reaching a volume of 1.6 million m3. Sales of aspen pulp log ad sawlog went 19% up, to 516,000 m3, while the sales of oak sawlog increased by 17%, reaching 203,000 m3, and Manchurian ash tree sawlog sales went 25% up, to 137,000 m3.

The Chinese woodworking industry generates strong demand for birch veneer logs from Russia, as WhatWood reported. This was significantly affected by the 10-year moratorium on the export of roundwood introduced by the Ukrainian authorities in 2015. At the end of 2017, the prices for birch veneer logs in China reached $150 per m3.

The plywood mills in China produce exterior layers from the birch veneer logs from Russia, but fear some possible quotas for export of veneer logs from Russia. At the moment, the draft decision on export restriction was prepared by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian federation.

In 2017, China reduced the Russian roundwood imports by 0.8% and increased the purchases of hardwood by 23%.
