{"id":75320,"date":"2018-03-07T14:36:23","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T14:36:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/french-rougier-group-files-bankruptcy-stops-activity-africa\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T08:47:40","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:47:40","slug":"french-rougier-group-files-bankruptcy-stops-activity-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/french-rougier-group-files-bankruptcy-stops-activity-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"French Rougier Group files for bankruptcy, stops activity in Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Tropical timber trader Rougier, based in\u00a0Niort (Deux-S\u00e8vres), with most of its employees working in\u00a0Cameroon and Africa,\u00a0filed for bankruptcy last Friday, and his future seems more uncertain than ever.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The group said that they have\u00a0\"<em>asked, with the support of its main French creditors, the opening of insolvency proceedings for the benefit of some French companies only from the Commercial Court of Poitiers<\/em>\".<\/p>\n<p>The Commercial Court of Poitiers will consider these requests on the 9th of March and will decide on March 13th of the follow-up to be given: liquidation or setting in receivership.<\/p>\n<p>The group explained that it \"<em>faces persistent difficulties in Cameroon<\/em>\", evoking \"<em>chronic engorgement<\/em>\" of the port of Douala which \"<em>profoundly disrupted the activities of the Cameroonian, Congolese and Central African subsidiaries<\/em>\".<\/p>\n<p>\"<em>This situation has caused persistent cash pressure, accentuated by the delay of refunds of VAT credits from African operating subsidiaries<\/em>,\" explains Rougier.<\/p>\n<p>The group added that at first, it took measures internally, before engaging in discussions with its main creditors in France.\u00a0Rougier had previously said that \"<em>the VAT credits of African states waiting for reimbursement, for Cameroon,reach almost 10 million euros<\/em>\".<\/p>\n<p>The trader employs some 3,000 people worldwide, including 2,900 in Africa, and controls seven factories on this continent.\u00a0The listing of the group's shares, which had incurred a net loss of 6.3 million euros in 2016 (last known figure), was suspended at its request on 27 February, \"<em>until further notice<\/em>\".<\/p>\n<p>\"<em>With the lack of involvement of the Cameroonian state to improve this situation, the group had no choice but to lay off all of its workforce in Cameroon - some 700 people - and therefore temporarily stop its activities in Cameroon<\/em>,\" said the management of Rougier.<\/p>\n<p>The point of tension \"<em>increased during the second half of 2017<\/em>\" at the port of Douala, which is also a point of evacuation of Congolese productions. The 2017 turnover was down 7.5% on the 149.4 million euros of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The group, founded in 1923, carries out three main activities to market wood in 50 countries: Rougier Afrique International (exploitation of natural forests, industrial processing and international trade), the import and distribution in France of wood of all origins, and plantations (study, management, and investment in industrial forest plantations in Africa).<\/p>\n<p>The import and distribution branch in France accounts for \"<em>about 25% of turnover<\/em>\", and has no problems with profitability and sustainability, unlike African activities, the group said.<\/p>\n<p>Rougier has six sawmilling factories in Africa: three in Gabon (in Mevang, Ivindo, and Mbouma), two in Cameroon (in Djoum and Mbang) and one recently in the Central African Republic (in Moual\u00e9) and one peeling plywood in Gabon.
