The Japanese Forestry Agency recently held a meeting for wood products demand projection for the first half of 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n

Imported lumber from North America, Europe and structural composite lumber are expected to decrease while logs from North America for the second quarter and from New Zealand for the first quarter are expected to rise. Supply of domestic logs for lumber processing would decrease slightly, but logs for plywood would increase by 8.5%.<\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese housing starts show signs of slowing and only 960,000 units are forecast for 2017, 9,000 less than the previous forecast. For 2018, 961,000 units are expected.<\/p>\n

The Japan Housing Federation reported that, based on a survey made on house builders, the index of orders for the third quarter of 2017 was minus 32 points. Orders were negative for six consecutive quarters.<\/p>\n

North American lumber supply to Japan will continue to bring climbing prices in 2018, while demand of North American logs remains firm and the imports for the second quarter are expected to be up by 7%, however this may vary due to weather conditions.<\/p>\n

Supply of European lumber, which climber in the fourth quarter of 2017, is expected to decrease in the first quarter of 2018, and Japanese purchases will be weak for the second quarter as well, since the market has no strength to pass on higher import costs. Arrivals of structural composite lumber for the first half of 2018 would decline by 11.5%, while domestic production would remain the same as 2017.<\/p>\n

Demand for domestic plywood would continue active for the first half of 2018. The supply is expected to increase as a new plywood mill would start up in April 2018. This would result in higher demand of domestic logs for plywood manufacturing in 2018.<\/p>\n

Meantime, there are different views on demand for domestic lumber. Some forecast the same degree of demand in the first half, while the others comment expect a slight decline in demand.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
