The Swedish sawmill industry has gained a strong position and very good international competitiveness, mainly in the UK and North African markets.<\/em><\/p>\n

Analysts from the\u00a0global consulting company McKinsey believe that Sweden needs to continue to increase\u00a0productivity, while working on product development in order to compete with the\u00a0relatively low production costs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The Swedish sawmill industry is competitive and a technically good product, combined with the benefits of wood from a sustainability perspective, gives Sweden good opportunities to develop its role in the global wood market<\/em>, \"says Mikael Eliasson, director of the Swedish Wood trade association.<\/p>\n

The study made by McKinsey has investigated the markets in Great Britain, North Africa, Western Europe, China, Japan and the United States and shows that the Swedish sawmill industry has the strongest position in Britain and North Africa, but also has a prominent position in the other western European markets.<\/p>\n

In the coming years, wood construction and thereby the demand for wood are expected to increase in both the UK and North Africa, which indicates a continued stable situation for Swedish sawmills in these markets. In the Asian and American markets, Russia and Canada dominate, but Sweden has also strengthened its position.<\/p>\n

About 70% of Sweden's wood production is exported, and all indicates that Sweden will maintain a high export level. In the study, Sweden's comparatively low production costs are shown as a competitive advantage. Due to high commodity costs, the distance to world markets and currency effects, the Swedish sawmill industry must continue to work to increase its productivity.<\/p>\n

\"Increased consolidation of the sawmill industry will also be necessary to increase productivity and competitiveness<\/em>,\" says Mats Kinnwall, chief economist at Forest Industries.<\/p>\n

The study highlights a number of factors that are important for the Swedish sawmill industry to develop its position. Factors that require political support and understanding.<\/p>\n

Due to the long distances in Sweden, the forestry industry is logistic. Political proposals that lead to increased logistical costs in the form of, for example, kilometer tax, must be stopped because they affect the industry's competitiveness and are especially affected are forestry companies operating in rural areas.<\/p>\n

\"The Swedish forestry and sawmill industry is very important for Swedish exports, for climate work and for employment outside the urban environment. At the same time, the industry has historically worked with small margins.
