This is the main conclusion drawn from the last auctions held in November and December.

Over the past financial year, and at an annual rate, the price increases averaged by around 10%, with some regional disparities.

For French professionals, the main question now is whether the markets in France will support a new price increase in 2018. Indeed, after four years of uninterrupted increase, or about 50% over 2014-2017, the prices of the oak sawlogs seem to have reached a level such that it is difficult to imagine a new increase without adverse repercussions on the health of markets.

On the other hand, the other hardwood markets are moving in a much less dynamic context. That of beech - one of the cheapest hardwoods in the world today - is plagued by the slow markets for sawn timber in France and Europe, in general. In fact, logs of good quality, intended for niche markets such as cabinetry or staircase, find buyers in the Hexagon and the neighboring countries, but in confidential volumes.

Fortunately, exports bring some air to French forest owners who risk selling beech. Overseas, the markets are divided into two distinct destinations. On the one hand the Maghreb, where, according to Mickaël Michaud, commercial at AJ Wood, "the market is characterized by a satisfactory volume of business but especially by very competitive prices" .

Moreover, in 2017, the business climate in the region was disrupted by the decision of the Algerian authorities to limit wood imports. But for 2018, a hope of recovery exists with an ongoing improvement of the situation in Algeria. After 6 months of embargo, the Algerian government is issuing import licenses again to traders who supply local processors directly.

Asia, on the other hand, could also play a positive role in the prospect of a recovery of the French beech market expected in 2018. "In the second half of 2017, Chinese demand was significantly higher compared to last year" , says Nicolas Talpin, co-manager of GST Bois. However, for beech loggers and traders, the restricted access to public sales and the additional costs of phytosanitary treatments for the export of logs, will still be obstacles in 2018.

The ash market could also benefit from the surge in the Asian demand, in particular, due to the rise of Vietnam as a very active Asian wood processor. The ash market, stable in price, is also distinguished by two outlets. The first concerns the beautiful qualities of whitewood or olive ash leaving France and the neighbors nearby. The second, which covers a small part of the Maghreb, is mainly focused on Asia, which absorbs very significant quantities in various qualities. "The log requirements in Asia allow us to regularly sell ash trees affected by chalarose disease. " Michel Jacquin, leader of Bois 39, adds that the slight drop in container rates by sea, recorded at the end of 2017, could also contribute to the maintenance of ash prices in 2018.

Table 1:

<p
