{"id":74884,"date":"2017-05-16T08:44:40","date_gmt":"2017-05-16T08:44:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/resolute-forest-products-cuts-shifts-7-sawmills-due-us-lumber-duties\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T08:47:05","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:47:05","slug":"resolute-forest-products-cuts-shifts-7-sawmills-due-us-lumber-duties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/resolute-forest-products-cuts-shifts-7-sawmills-due-us-lumber-duties\/","title":{"rendered":"Resolute Forest Products cuts shifts at 7 sawmills due to US lumber duties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Forestry workers in Quebec prepare for the layoffs start, as a result of the softwood lumber dispute with the United States.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Starting Monday, Resolute Forest Products is cutting shifts at seven sawmills and delaying the start of forest operations that will affect 1,282 workers.\u00a0Pierrot Fortin, who experienced such heartache during the last impasse in the early 2000s, is again preparing for lost income and uncertainty, The Canadian Press reported.<\/p>\n<p>\"<em>Work stoppages like this are never easy<\/em>,\" said the truck driver who hauls wood from forests in the Lac-Saint-Jean region.\u00a0\"<em>It has an impact on families and everyone is worried<\/em>.\"<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the temporary curtailments will be extended as companies feel growing pressure from retroactive duties and the prospect of additional preliminary charges to be announced next month.<br \/>\nBetween 2000 and 2006, during the last softwood lumber dispute, Canada shed 20,000 forestry jobs and about 400 sawmills closed entirely between 2004 and 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Unifor, which represents 24,000 forestry workers at 134 companies, fears duties this time will hurt 25,000 Canadian jobs.\u00a0La Tuque mayor Normand Beaudoin says any downtime longer than two weeks currently planned for about 100 mill employees would be difficult for families in the small town about 200 kilometres south of the Lac-Saint-Jean region, The Canadian Press reported.<\/p>\n<p>\"<em>In the short-term I don't have a lot of worries, but if it goes on for one or two years it will do a lot of harm,<\/em>\" Beaudoin said.<\/p>\n<p>\"<em>Although workers were aware of the challenges facing the industry, they were surprised by the speed with which Resolute moved to cut costs \u2014 especially since the company's preliminary duties are below the 20 per cent Canadian average with no retroactivity<\/em>\", said Daniel Leblond, president of the Unifor local at the Dolbeau-Mistassini sawmill.<\/p>\n<p>Resolute said the immediate impact on the industry is largely because of volatility in market pricing thanks to the duties, and the fact that some U.S. customers had built up some supply in anticipation of the duties.\u00a0Still, it has created anxiety because there are no answers to questions if the layoffs will be extended.<\/p>\n<p>Leblond also fears that two papers mills might start to cut more jobs if there's no relief from punishing duties on supercalendered paper. Also, the mills in Quebec will going to be the first to feel the effects of the softwood duties. Despite this, a\u00a0cedar mill in New Brunswick recently closed, affecting six workers.<\/p>\n<p>\"<em>Many of the workers, probably most of them, have been through the last round of softwood lumber negotiations, and the uncertainty around how long this will last is what is causing the grief<\/em>,\" said Bob Matters, wood council chairman for the United Steelworkers union.<\/p>\n<p>While the main employer in town is the mill or the manufacturing facility, many families have several members employed in the forest sector, so any cuts cause widespread pain and have far-reaching ramifications for forest-dependent communities.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forestry workers in Quebec prepare for the layoffs start, as a result of the softwood lumber dispute with the United States.
