(bbf) of softwood lumber in the first two months of 2017, a gain of 1.7% from 5.199 bbf in the year before.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) reported in its latest Lumber Track report, of the two-month total, Western U.S. sawmills accounted for 2.176 bbf, down 2.4% from 2.229 bbf a year earlier, while Southern sawmills contributed 2.867 bbf \u2013 up 4.9% from last year\u2019s 2.732 bbf.<\/p>\n<p>Production in February by US sawmills was 2.633 bbf, a year-over-year drop of 0.7% from 2.651 bbf, and down 0.7% from production in January 2017 of 2.652 bbf.<\/p>\n<p>Western sawmills contributed 1.086 bbf to February\u2019s production volume, down 4.0% from 1.131 bbf in February last year, and 0.4% lower than January\u2019s output of 1.090 bbf.<\/p>\n<p>Southern sawmills produced 1.427 bbf in February, an increase of 2.0% from 1.399 bbf in the year before, but 0.9% lower than January\u2019s output of 1.440 bbf.<\/p>\n<p>Apparent U.S. softwood lumber consumption was 7.689 bbf in the first two months, down 1.1% from 7.773 bbf in the same period last year. Consumption in February was 3.874 bbf, a year-over-year drop of 6.2% from 4.131 bbf, but up 1.6% from 3.815 bbf in January 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Canadian softwood lumber production\/consumption<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Canadian sawmills produced 4.674 bbf in the first two months, up 1.4% from 4.611 bbf at the same time last year. Sawmills in British Columbia accounted for 2.133 bbf of the two-month total, down 5.1% from 2.246 bbf a year earlier, while sawmills east of the Rockies contributed 2.541 bbf, an increase of 7.5% from 2.365 bbf a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>In February alone, Canadian production was 2.254 bbf, a decline of 3.1% from 2.327 bbf in February 2016, and down 6.9% from 2.420 bbf in January 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Sawmills in British Columbia contributed 1.028 bbf to February\u2019s output, a year-over-year drop of 8.6% from 1.125 bbf, and was down 6.9% from 1.104 bbf in the previous month.<\/p>\n<p>Sawmills east of the Rockies produced 1.226 bbf in February, a 2.0% increase from 1.201 bbf in February last year, but down 6.8% from the previous month\u2019s production volume of 1.316 bbf.<\/p>\n<p>Apparent Canadian softwood lumber consumption dropped 6.9% in the first two months of 2017, to 1.508 bbf from 1.620 bbf a year earlier. Apparent consumption in February was 708 million board ft. (mmbf), down 11.3% from 798 mmbf in February 2016, and 11.5% below 800 mmbf in January 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S. and Canada utilization\/inventories<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>U.S. production as a percentage of practical capacity averaged 86% in the first two months, up from 84% in the same period last year. In Canada, the percentage was 92%, up from 91% in the first two months of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. inventories dropped 1.0% in February to 3.081 bbf from 3.112 bbf a year earlier, while in Canada, inventories increased by 0.9% to 3.082 bbf from 3.055 bbf.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US sawmills produced 5.285 billion board ft.
