The US\u00a0Department of Commerce has decided to delay the deadline\u00a0for preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian softwood lumber to June 23, instead of May 4, as originally announced.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The petitioner asked for the deadline to be extended so the agency has \u201csufficient time to gather and review all the relevant information<\/em>,\u201d said Will Reinert , the U.S. Department of Commerce spokesman. The delay sent shares of Seattle-based Weyerhaeuser Co. tumbling as much as 1.8 percent in New York, the biggest intraday drop since March 6, Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n

The softwood lumber dispute began again in November when the US producers\u00a0filed a petition asking for duties to be imposed on Canadian lumber. The reason for this was specified by the US Lumber Coalition, saying that the\u00a0Canadian timber is heavily subsidized and imports are harming mills and workers.<\/p>\n

\"The department\u2019s decision on countervailing duties is still expected to be released next week and the two duties combined -- countervailing and antidumping -- will probably be big enough to hurt Canadian producers<\/em>\", said Kevin Mason, managing director of ERA Forest Products Research.<\/p>\n

Probably, the antidumping duties will probably be from 10 percent to 15 percent, while countervailing duties will be 20 percent to 30 percent. The U.S. doesn\u2019t have enough domestic softwood lumber to meet its own housing demand, and higher prices stemming from duties will be passed on to consumers,\u00a0Bloomberg reported<\/p>\n

There has been more than 20% surges in wood prices in the US since the election and the penalties could increase even more, while the lumber\u00a0futures have jumped about 18 percent this year.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
