For European furniture and wood suppliers, the difficulty is familiar: customers want cheaper products while factories need higher volumes to cover their costs.

Worldwide IKEA retail sales fell to €43.8 billion in the financial year ended 31 August 2026, down 1.9% in reported terms and 0.7% after currency adjustments. It was the third consecutive annual decline, following sales of €44.6 billion in FY25, €45.1 billion in FY24 and €47.6 billion in FY23. Sales are now approximately 8% below their FY23 level in nominal euros. The more immediate concern for manufacturers is the reduction in physical demand. Inter IKEA says lower demand led to smaller purchasing volumes and poorer utilisation of production capacity at both independent suppliers and its own factories. That leaves suppliers carrying machinery, buildings and labour costs across fewer orders.

The results published on 6 November are those of Inter IKEA Group, which manages the franchise system, product development, wholesale supply and IKEA Industry. Its earnings are separate from those of Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer. Worldwide retail sales combine the sales of all 13 franchisee groups.

Operating profit falls faster than sales

Inter IKEA largely held wholesale prices stable during FY26, but demand from retailers weakened. Restructuring also added costs. The combination reduced the earnings available to support the next round of price reductions, even though the business remained profitable.

Inter IKEA revenue represents total operating income. Changes use unrounded figures; the worldwide retail sales change is company-reported. pp = percentage points.

The operating result gives a less comfortable picture than the smaller decline in net profit. Net financial income increased to €323 million from €227 million, cushioning the fall in earnings.

Cash generation was stronger. Operating cash flow rose to €2.64 billion from €1.25 billion, supported by a €580 million working-capital inflow. Inventories fell to €4.49 billion from €4.83 billion, while year-end cash increased to €3.97 billion.

In GWMI’s assessment, that liquidity gives Inter IKEA room to continue investing while accepting pressure on margins. Suppliers face a different calculation: a customer’s strong cash balance does not fill a production line. Their recovery depends on the volume, timing and profitability of orders.

A €1.2 billion price programme begins in FY27

The latest European price initiative started on 1 September 2026, immediately after the reporting year closed. Inter IKEA and its retail franchisees are contributing approximately €1.2 billion to lower customer prices. Inter IKEA is reducing the prices charged to European franchisees, with retailers making additional reductions. Selected products are being discounted by up to 25%, although the range and timing vary by market.

In Germany, more than 1,500 products are receiving average reductions of around 20%. Ingka chief executive Juvencio Maeztu has said the retailer is prepared to accept a lower margin to improve affordability.

The commercial calculation is straightforward, but demanding. A product discounted by 20% needs a 25% increase in unit sales simply to maintain revenue, before allowing for production costs or changes in the product mix. That is an illustration of the arithmetic, rather than a forecast for IKEA’s entire range.

For suppliers, higher volumes could improve factory utilisation and spread fixed costs more widely. The risk is that orders recover too slowly to offset the pressure to produce furniture more cheaply. The published price programme concerns wholesale and retail pricing; it does not establish a uniform reduction in the prices IKEA pays panel, timber or furniture suppliers.

More locations, little change in visits

IKEA opened 87 sales locations during FY26 and ended the year with 784 locations: 519 stores and smaller stores, plus 265 planning and ordering points. Visits totalled 913 million, compared with 915 million in FY25. A larger network has therefore not yet produced a substantial increase in aggregate physical visits.

The expansion includes IKEA’s first store in New Zealand and further smaller formats in existing markets. Seven stores closed in China. Inter IKEA chief executive Jakub Jankowski has made restoring growth a priority after several years of stagnant sales.

Smaller shops can bring IKEA closer to customers, but much of the furniture still has to reach them through a distribution centre or home-delivery service. For the supply chain, GWMI expects that to place greater weight on stock availability, reliable packaging and delivery performance. Opening a planning point creates a new route to customers; the factory benefit arrives when it generates additional orders.

Inter IKEA also reported a global workforce reduction of 850 during the year. The annual accounts recognise restructuring costs in FY26, with savings expected to become visible from FY27.

Polish investment concentrates on efficient production

IKEA’s manufacturing plans in Poland show how investment can continue during a weak market. The Zbąszynek complex has an investment programme of approximately €100 million covering board production, paper-foil application and automated packaging. Management is targeting 51 million furniture items in FY27, against approximately 45 million in the preceding year, an increase of about 13%. The target remains dependent on demand and operating conditions.

The largest project is the Cyclic Thin Board Line at Chlastawa, part of the complex. Its planned capacity is 82,000 m³ a year, using manufacturing residues to produce new boards. The reported investment is PLN 278.3 million, with production expected towards the end of 2027. The installation will manufacture boards measuring 2–5 mm, with their wood content sourced entirely from recycled material.

Expansion is selective. IKEA Industry has also announced 240 job cuts at Wielbark and 160 at Goleniów. Zbąszynek benefits from established ranges including KALLAX and EKET, while management says its factories are assessed against other suppliers on efficiency and competitiveness.

For the wood industry, the board project adds a second consideration to the sales outlook. More furniture units need not produce an equivalent increase in demand for fresh wood. Recovering residues and using lighter structures can reduce material requirements per item. If these technologies work at industrial scale, part of future growth could be supplied through better use of material already entering factories.

The exposure extends through Europe’s wood industry

IKEA’s own factories supply around 10% of its product range, with independent manufacturers providing the remainder. Zbąszynek accounts for close to half of IKEA Industry’s output, rather than half of all products sold by IKEA. Most of the manufacturing response to changes in retail demand therefore takes place outside the group’s own plants.

The scale of that exposure is substantial. IKEA’s published FY25 sourcing figures show suppliers processing approximately 14.7 million m³ of roundwood equivalent for its products. Recycled wood represented around 19% of total wood use. Its sourcing breakdown attributes 29% of virgin wood to Poland, 12% to Lithuania and 8% to Sweden. Composite materials account for about 69% of the wood-based material mix.

These figures help explain why IKEA’s purchasing volumes are relevant to panel mills, furniture-component factories and sawmills well beyond its direct manufacturing operations. A slowdown can pass through several suppliers before reaching the business buying logs or recovered wood.

The closure of Sweden’s Vanhälls Såg illustrates the pressure at the smaller end of that chain. The specialist birch sawmill has faced weak markets, more expensive raw material and competition from pulp producers. Such businesses have limited room to absorb another period of low orders while waiting for retail demand to improve.

Energy adds pressure as the new financial year starts

The November energy market adds a further obstacle to IKEA’s efforts to lower prices. Figures reported on 7 November put electricity prices so far that month 270% above the corresponding period a year earlier in Sweden’s SE4 area and 143% higher in SE3. These are early-November comparisons, after the close of IKEA’s FY26 accounts.

Germany also entered November with gas storage around 60–61% full, well below normal seasonal levels. The Bundesnetzagentur nevertheless describes German gas supplies as stable and the current risk of a strained supply situation as low. Low inventories and elevated prices create cost uncertainty without establishing that industrial shortages are inevitable.

For furniture suppliers, the exposure differs by process and energy contract. Drying timber, manufacturing panels, machining components and operating extraction systems all require energy. The commercial pressure is especially severe when higher energy bills arrive while a factory is running below capacity.

Inter IKEA reports that all electricity consumed in its own operations was renewable in FY26, through on-site generation, off-site contracts or renewable-energy certificates. Renewable energy production at IKEA Industry sites increased by 46%. Those measures do not mean that every plant produces its own electricity or that independent suppliers have the same protection against market prices.

GWMI’s assessment is that IKEA’s next year will be judged in factories as much as in shops. Lower prices and more convenient stores can generate orders, while automation and material recovery can reduce the cost of fulfilling them. But suppliers need those orders soon enough, and at margins sufficient to keep production viable. The balance between cheaper furniture and a financially sustainable supply base remains unresolved.

IKEA is entering another year of price reductions with falling sales, lower operating profits and fewer orders passing through its manufacturing network.
