Binderholz is adding to its international sawmilling business, with further investment in northern Europe alongside its production operations in central Europe and the United States.<\/p>\n

The Austrian group completed the purchase of Kuhmo at the end of October, bringing its Finnish sawmilling network to three locations. Kuhmo joins the existing mills at Lieksa and Nurmes, increasing both the volume of timber available to the group and its share of Finnish pine production.<\/p>\n

Kuhmo produces approximately 500,000 m\u00b3 of sawn timber annually, processing more than one million m\u00b3 of sawlogs. Pine accounts for about 80% of its output, with spruce making up the remainder. The business employs around 180 people and has annual sales of roughly \u20ac150 million.<\/p>\n

The addition is sizeable relative to Binderholz\u2019s existing Finnish operations. Fastmarkets estimates the combined annual sawn timber capacity of Lieksa and Nurmes at around 500,000 m\u00b3. Kuhmo\u2019s reported production is therefore comparable in scale to the capacity of those two mills together. Binderholz first entered Finland in 2016 and subsequently acquired planing and glulam operations in Lieksa.<\/p>\n

Before the Kuhmo purchase closed, subsidiary BSW reported that Binderholz\u2019s annual sawn timber production exceeded five million m\u00b3. The group has sawmills in Austria, Germany, Finland, the UK, Latvia and the United States. Its wider business includes engineered wood, solid wood panels, packaging and biofuels.<\/p>\n

Chairman Reinhard Binder said the Finnish mills would help supply high-quality timber to the group\u2019s further-processing plants. Kuhmo also adds to the range of products available through Binderholz\u2019s international sales network.<\/p>\n

Much of the group\u2019s recent growth in sawmilling has come through acquisitions. The purchases of the former Klausner mills in Florida and North Carolina in 2020\u201321 established a manufacturing presence in the US Southern Yellow Pine market.<\/p>\n

The acquisition of BSW in January 2022 brought more than 1.2 million m\u00b3 of annual sawn timber capacity, together with forestry, harvesting, processing and distribution businesses. BSW remains a substantial part of the group, currently listing annual sawn timber capacity of 1.2 million m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Subsequent purchases have extended the British business into packaging and timber services. BSW acquired Scott Group in December 2022, adding pallet manufacturing, repair and reuse operations. The Pallet LOOP became wholly part of BSW in 2024, while subsidiary Tilhill acquired the business and assets of Scottish harvesting specialist Duffy Skylining in September 2025.<\/p>\n

The Finnish expansion comes during a difficult period for the group\u2019s existing mills in the country. Earlier this year, Binderholz Nordic opened negotiations covering possible redundancies and temporary layoffs at Lieksa and Nurmes. Management cited high sawlog prices, increased energy costs and weak demand.<\/p>\n

Investment has also continued in further processing. At St. Georgen in Austria, Binderholz\u2019s automated solid wood panel plant produces panels for construction, furniture and interior applications. Other group factories manufacture glulam, cross-laminated timber and planed products, providing internal customers for part of its sawmill output.<\/p>\n
