Industrial wood and fuel demand are providing additional outlets as sawmill production remains subdued.**

German sawmills are approaching the winter buying season with limited room to increase their raw-material costs. Weak construction demand and uncertain sawn-timber orders have encouraged buyers to reduce selected log quotations and keep purchases closely tied to production requirements.

For forest owners, however, the market remains more varied than a general fall in timber prices would imply. Suitable fresh softwood logs continue to find buyers, large oak logs retain considerable value, and industrial and energy uses provide outlets for material that does not meet sawlog specifications.

Reports from forest-owner organisations place fresh spruce sawlogs around €115–120 per solid cubic metre in several autumn contracts. Pine remains cheaper, with published indications of €82–90/m³. These are regional selling quotations for specified assortments, with differences in quality, dimensions and delivery terms.

Spruce prices retreat from spring levels

Fresh spruce in B or B/C quality, diameter class 2b and above, is generally quoted at €115–120/m³ in the regional reports examined. Fixed-length logs account for much of the business, while suitable high-quality long logs can still achieve up to €130/m³.

The adjustment from earlier in the year is visible in successive regional market reports. Some spring benchmarks moved from €130 to €123/m³, followed by autumn quotations around €115–120/m³. Although the specifications are not identical in every report, the direction is clear: mills have become less willing to pay the prices achieved during the stronger spring market.

The reduction is also uneven across assortments. Fresh logs meeting a mill’s preferred lengths and dimensions remain more marketable than damaged or lower-grade material. Regional indications for beetle-damaged spruce and C/D or D grades are around €85–95/m³, leaving a sizeable discount to fresh sawlogs.

Some contracts covering deliveries through January 2027 still quote approximately €120/m³ for the main spruce fixed-length assortment. This gives forest owners an outlet for planned winter harvesting, although long logs and less standard specifications may require advance agreement.

Better mill inventories have reduced the urgency of purchasing in some districts. Elsewhere, limited availability of suitable fresh logs continues to support buying. The result is a market in which procurement prices can weaken without mills withdrawing from the market altogether.

Pine trades below spruce despite a stronger official price trend

Fresh pine sawlogs in B/C quality, diameter class 2b and above, are being quoted at approximately €82–90/m³ in regional autumn schedules. Individual indications include €82/m³ for fixed-length material and upper quotations of €88–90/m³ elsewhere.

The gap to spruce is therefore substantial in euro terms. At the quoted regional levels, pine may trade roughly €25–38/m³ below comparable headline spruce assortments, although the final difference depends on the quality and cutting requirements of each contract.

Pine demand remains closely connected to individual sawmills’ order books. Buyers may require particular lengths or dimensions, which affects both the marketability of a parcel and the price available. For owners preparing winter harvesting, cutting to an agreed specification remains central to obtaining the quoted price.

The regional reports do not describe a uniform surplus of pine. Some indicate limited availability of large volumes of storm- or beetle-damaged timber. Mills may therefore be cautious about price while continuing to seek the particular fresh assortments needed for existing orders.

<div style="max-width: 900px; Regional October schedules quote B-grade oak at approximately €145/m³ in diameter class 3a, €205/m³ in class 3b and €310/m³ in class 4 and above.

Lower grades sell at considerably lower levels. C-grade oak indications include €105/m³ in class 3b and €145/m³ in class 4 and above. The difference between B and C quality can therefore be as important as the general direction of the hardwood market.

Forest-owner organisations continue to report demand for good-quality oak. Buyers are nevertheless selective, and high prices for large B-grade logs should not be applied to a mixed parcel containing smaller dimensions or lower-quality material.

For an owner considering an oak harvest, the likely distribution between grades and diameter classes is critical. A relatively small quantity of valuable logs can lift the return from a sale, while the remainder depends on lower-priced sawlog, industrial or energy outlets.

Beech enters the winter season on weaker terms

Beech is facing a less favourable price environment. Regional quotations for fresh B-grade logs range from around €80/m³ in diameter class 3b to €90/m³ in class 6. C-grade indications are approximately €70–77/m³ across the same range of diameter classes.

Forest-owner reports describe prices as stable at a relatively low level. Demand for individual parcels still depends on quality and processing requirements, while lower-grade material may compete with firewood or industrial uses.

The difference from oak is considerable. Large, good-quality oak can command several times the quoted price of beech, but the two species serve different customers and end markets. Strong demand for selected oak logs therefore provides little guidance on the prospects for beech.

For mixed hardwood harvesting, securing an outlet for the lower grades is particularly important. The return depends on the whole assortment mix, including material that cannot be sold as higher-quality sawlogs.

Official indices show a different stage of the market

The latest Destatis figures available for this analysis cover August 2026, before the autumn delivery periods described in many regional price schedules.

The spruce log price index stood at 138.6 in August, on a base of 2015=100. It was almost unchanged from July but 18.4% above August 2025. Pine reached 123.5, up 1.4% from July and 18.1% from a year earlier.

Both softwood series were at their highest levels within the January 2020–August 2026 period examined by GWMI. The later reduction in some autumn contract quotations therefore followed a period of substantial annual increases in official softwood log prices.

Oak’s August index was 130.5, down 2.9% from July but still 7.5% above a year earlier. Its average increase over January–August was much smaller, at 1.6%, and the index remained below its early-2023 peak.

Beech recorded the weakest annual performance of the four species. Its index recovered by 5.0% during August to 119.8 after a sharp July decline, but remained 10.1% below August 2025. The January–August average was 2.1% lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year.

These figures describe movements in state-forest selling prices. They are indices, not prices in euros per cubic metre. The €115–120/m³ spruce and €82–90/m³ pine quotations concern later regional contracts for specific assortments.

Lower procurement prices provide limited relief to sawmills

The pressure on log quotations comes from a sawmilling sector still struggling to secure sufficient profitable orders. Lower raw-material costs can help individual mills, but their production decisions also depend on sales volumes, energy and labour costs, and achievable sawn-timber prices.

German industry associations reported that 2025 was the weakest production year in a decade. In June, they warned that construction-timber production could fall by a further 9–10% in 2026 if conditions failed to improve. That figure was a conditional industry projection, rather than a measured full-year result.

Official selling-price data provide some evidence of increases downstream. September producer prices for softwood sawn timber were 6.9% above a year earlier, while hardwood sawn timber prices were 2.0% higher. Higher selling prices alone, however, do not establish an improvement in profitability when mills are operating with reduced volumes.

The wider wood industry also remains under pressure. Revenue at establishments with more than 50 employees fell by 0.4% in the first half of 2026 to just under €18 billion. Establishment numbers declined by 4% and employment by 3.5%.

Housing approvals offer a more positive signal. Germany permitted 169,400 dwellings in new and existing buildings during January–August, an increase of 12.1% from a year earlier. August approvals rose by 6.8% to 20,600.

The timing of any benefit to timber suppliers remains uncertain. Approved projects must secure financing and move into construction before they generate additional orders. Current forest-owner and industry reports still describe cautious purchasing and difficult sawn-timber sales.

A smaller harvest complicates the supply picture

Improved inventories at some mills should also be viewed against a smaller national harvest. Germany harvested 57.3 million m³ in 2025, down 6.4% from the previous year.

Damaged-timber removals fell much faster, declining by 53.7% to 12.7 million m³. Their share of the total harvest dropped to 22.1%, compared with 74.8% in 2020.

The reduction in salvage timber changes the basis of supply. Mills that previously received large volumes generated by forest damage increasingly depend on regular harvesting decisions. Forest owners have more influence over the timing of those operations than they do when damaged timber must be removed quickly.

Harvesting of the official spruce, fir, Douglas fir and other-conifer group declined by about 14.3% in 2025. Pine and larch harvesting increased by 9.2%.

These differences help explain why local improvements in log availability can coexist with continuing industry concerns about future supply. A well-stocked mill at the start of autumn does not necessarily have its winter requirements fully covered.

Industrial wood and energy markets offer firmer outlets

Industrial roundwood is benefiting from reduced availability of sawmill residues. When mills process fewer logs, they also produce less material for fibre, board and energy markets. Some customers consequently seek additional roundwood supplies.

Regional softwood industrial-wood indications are around €25–30 per stacked cubic metre, depending on quality. Other schedules list fresh paperwood and short softwood energy logs at up to €32 per stacked cubic metre. Beech industrial longwood is quoted at up to €80 per solid cubic metre in one regional schedule.

The units are different: a stacked cubic metre includes the spaces between logs, while a solid cubic metre measures the wood itself. These prices cannot be compared directly.

Demand is also uneven between buyers and districts. Some forest-owner organisations report strong industrial requirements, while others advise against preparing particular paperwood assortments because a local outlet is unavailable. Energy and fibre uses may provide alternatives, but acceptance depends on the buyer’s specifications.

Fuel-chip prices have risen more clearly. The German A1 woodchip benchmark increased from €34.46 per loose cubic metre in the second quarter to €38.90 in the third, a rise of 12.9%. A2 prices increased to €31.10, while grade B reached €22.05.

Those quotations concern deliveries of 80 loose cubic metres within 50 km and exclude VAT. Reduced sawmill residue production, higher processing costs and seasonal fuel demand have all contributed to the increase.

Winter purchases remain tied to mill requirements

The German log market is entering winter with weaker quotations for some spruce assortments but continuing demand for suitable fresh material. Pine remains below spruce in absolute price terms, oak rewards quality and diameter, and beech sellers face a weaker annual price comparison.

For sawmills, a sustained improvement requires more profitable sawn-timber orders. Lower log prices can ease procurement costs, but they cannot compensate fully for weak capacity utilisation.

For forest owners, the commercial result depends increasingly on matching each assortment to an available outlet. Agreed cutting specifications and delivery periods remain important for sawlogs, while industrial and energy sales can improve the return from mixed harvesting operations.

Fresh spruce sawlogs are being quoted at around €115–120/m³ in regional autumn contracts, while pine indications range from €82 to €90/m³.

[5204

post-100498","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
