The wood-products business recorded its fifth consecutive quarterly comparable operating loss, with weak construction demand and changes to its production network weighing on earnings.<\/p>\n

Mets\u00e4 Wood reported a comparable operating loss of \u20ac10.5 million in the third quarter of 2026, compared with \u20ac6.2 million a year earlier. Sales fell 29.8% to \u20ac80.3 million, the lowest quarterly total since the start of 2025.<\/p>\n

The deterioration continued through the year. The first quarter produced sales of \u20ac110.9 million and a comparable operating loss of \u20ac6.6 million; the second brought sales of \u20ac97.9 million and a \u20ac7.4 million loss. Third-quarter sales were another 18.0% below the preceding quarter.<\/p>\n

For January\u2013September, sales totalled \u20ac289.2 million, down 21.6% from \u20ac368.9 million a year earlier. The comparable operating loss widened to \u20ac24.5 million from \u20ac5.7 million, while the reported operating loss reached \u20ac33.1 million. The nine-month comparable operating margin was \u22128.5%.<\/p>\n

Engineered-wood deliveries fell to 74,000 m\u00b3 in the third quarter from 92,000 m\u00b3 a year earlier, a decline of 19.6%. Nine-month deliveries were 248,000 m\u00b3, down 18.4%. These volumes cover engineered wood products, rather than all sales of the division.<\/p>\n

GWMI \u00b7 Global Wood Markets Info<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mets\u00e4 put the combined adverse effect of starting up the \u00c4\u00e4nekoski Kerto LVL mill, closing Suolahti and restructuring its UK operations at \u20ac30 million on the nine-month comparable operating result. The costs therefore continued to weigh on earnings even within the company\u2019s comparable measure.<\/p>\n

The same three changes had already reduced the first-quarter comparable result by \u20ac11.1 million and the first-half result by \u20ac20.1 million. In its half-year review, Mets\u00e4 also reported curtailed engineered-wood production as European construction demand remained weak. Energy costs, currency movements and US tariffs added pressure.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Spruce plywood production at Suolahti ended in May. Restructuring announced with the half-year results involved around 100 job reductions in the UK and another 100 across Finland and Estonia. The contraction in sales has therefore coincided with a reduction in capacity and changes to the UK customer portfolio.<\/p>\n

The latest demand outlook remains uneven across products. Weak European construction continues to limit Kerto LVL demand, while birch plywood is expected to remain broadly stable despite seasonal slowing. Mets\u00e4 reported an improved outlook for birch plywood used in heavy-duty transport equipment.
