Renovation work and project orders continue to support sales, but weaker household confidence has slowed demand in several markets since the summer, while manufacturers face further increases in production costs.

The European Parquet Federation (FEP), whose board reviewed market conditions in Paris on 20 October, described a sector that is broadly holding its position, with considerable differences between countries. Modest growth in some markets contrasts with a disappointing third quarter in Germany and sales below expectations in the Netherlands.

The difficulty for producers extends beyond order volumes. Labour, energy and raw material costs are increasing, yet customers remain resistant to higher prices. FEP also reported greater difficulty sourcing hardwood in certain regions, adding to procurement pressures. In Italy, where parquet volumes were reported to be up approximately 3–4%, manufacturers face rising prices for the higher-quality wood required for flooring.

Import competition is adding to the pressure on selling prices. FEP raised concerns about competition it considers unfair from China, alongside rapidly expanding shipments from other origins. Its assessment did not provide figures for those import flows.

Household spending decisions are another constraint. In Austria, a relatively favourable first half was followed by a summer slowdown as consumers increased savings and gave greater priority to leisure than to home renovation. French manufacturers reported a similar deterioration in confidence, despite an earlier improvement in multilayer parquet sales.

France’s multilayer segment grew by 2–3% in the first half, according to FEP, while solid wood flooring remained weaker. The federation expects uncertainty ahead of the presidential election to prolong cautious purchasing and investment decisions.

Germany presents a less consistent picture. Early improvements in construction activity have emerged from a low base, but the parquet market failed to meet expectations in the third quarter. FEP members estimated volumes at 10–15% below the corresponding period of 2025, although the federation continued to describe overall market conditions as broadly stable.

In the Netherlands, volumes were estimated at 5–7% below expectations—a shortfall against anticipated sales, rather than a reported year-on-year decline. Residential construction is recovering only gradually, and suppliers have limited room to pass on higher costs. FEP nevertheless identified a potential opening for wood flooring from growing consumer dissatisfaction with PVC products.

The Nordic markets also lost some momentum after first-half gains of around 1–2%. Sweden remains the most optimistic market in the regional assessment, helped by renovation demand, while Finland continues to face more difficult trading conditions. Norway retains supportive economic fundamentals. Denmark has performed well, but signs of softer demand are appearing.

Elsewhere, construction activity and relatively favourable financing continue to support Croatia, although higher wages and energy costs are increasing pressure on businesses. Spain’s domestic and export sales remain broadly comparable with last year, while Switzerland reported growth of approximately 1–2%, mainly from project and contract business.

Taken together, the national reports point to a market still dependent on pockets of renovation and construction demand. These are sustaining orders, but the summer slowdown and limited scope for price increases leave producers with little relief from rising costs.

FEP’s next annual gathering, comprising its 71st General Assembly and 51st Parquet Congress, is scheduled for 10–11 June 2027 in Split, Croatia.

European parquet markets: country by country

Market conditions reported by FEP members, October 2026

Market

Market assessment

Austria
→

Demand improved during the first half of 2026 before losing momentum
over the summer.
