Additional supplies are helping sawmills reduce log procurement costs, but transport, storage and handling expenses leave suppliers with narrow margins. Falling roundwood prices and weak demand for finished products are adding to the pressure.

Mellanskog’s third-quarter results show the scale of that imbalance. The forest owners’ association increased deliveries by 73.5% compared with a year earlier, yet its parent association recorded an operating profit of just SEK 7 million (€0.63 million). Revenue rose 36.1% to SEK 1.674 billion (€150.29 million), leaving an operating margin of approximately 0.4%.

The quarterly result improved from a loss a year earlier, helped by greater volumes and lower overheads. However, earnings over the first nine months remained far below 2025 levels. The association has been moving exceptional quantities of storm timber through a market that is paying less for wood, while bearing the additional expense of getting those volumes to customers.

Settlement statistics record wood priced during the reporting period and can lag changes in new contracts. They also differ from buyers’ base price lists and from forest owners’ net receipts after harvesting costs.

Mellanskog’s subsequent price reductions show that purchasing conditions remained weak later in the year. From 1 September, the association cut its spruce sawlog base price by SEK 50 (€4.49) per m³fub. Small-diameter pine and spruce logs, including short logs, were reduced by SEK 25 (€2.24), as was pulpwood. The new base prices were SEK 435 (€39.05) for softwood pulpwood and SEK 415 (€37.26) for birch pulpwood.

The changes applied to new contracts in seven counties, including Värmland, Örebro and Uppsala. They were separate from the special arrangements for storm timber. Mellanskog attributed the reductions to weaker market conditions and lower demand, meaning the national price correction cannot be explained by salvage supply alone.

One favourable development has been the condition of the recovered wood. Mellanskog reported that trees retaining root contact had preserved their quality better than expected. Its new category for blue-stained timber consequently saw limited use during the quarter. Keeping suitable logs in sawmilling assortments helps protect their value and reduces the losses associated with downgrading them to pulpwood.

The association expected salvage work to continue through December. From 1 October, it also resumed accepting owner-delivered sawlogs in the affected areas, with advance contracting required so that deliveries could be matched to industrial needs. The operation was progressing, but available outlets and delivery schedules continued to determine how quickly wood could move.

Setra’s results show how lower raw-material costs are feeding through to processors. Its third-quarter operating loss narrowed to SEK 12 million (€1.08 million), from SEK 148 million (€13.29 million) a year earlier. Sales reached SEK 1.286 billion (€115.46 million). The company identified cheaper logs following Johannes, internal efficiency improvements and favourable currency effects as contributors to the recovery.

The improvement remained vulnerable to finished-product prices. Setra reported continued pressure on those prices, while planned maintenance shutdowns weakened July’s earnings. The following months were profitable, but not enough to produce a positive result for the full quarter.

Mellanskog’s consolidated accounts also remained under strain. The group reported third-quarter operating profit of SEK 21 million (€1.89 million), excluding the item affecting comparability associated with Setra’s Malå sawmill divestment. On the same basis, the nine-month operating result was a loss of SEK 124 million (€11.13 million). Group operating cash flow was negative SEK 513 million (€46.06 million) in the third quarter, despite positive operating cash flow at the parent association.

The remaining salvage programme will test whether Mellanskog can keep delivery volumes high without allowing logistics costs to absorb the proceeds. Better-preserved timber offers some protection, and lower overheads have helped. But with the parent association barely breaking even over nine months, further earnings improvement depends on the price received for each assortment and the cost of moving it—not simply on selling more cubic metres.

The cost of clearing Sweden’s storm-damaged forests is absorbing much of the revenue generated by higher wood deliveries.
