Total log imports rose 10.5% to 2.83 million m³. Softwoods accounted for roughly 58% of lumber purchases and 78% of log arrivals during the month.

The softwood lumber comparison is based on GWMI calculations using the approximately 1.36 million m³ reported for September 2025. The increase in total log arrivals, meanwhile, partly reversed an 11.1% decline a year earlier; volumes remained below September 2024’s 2.88 million m³.

Softwood lumber loses nearly 1.8 million m³ over nine months

During January–September 2026, China imported 9.354 million m³ of softwood lumber. Compared with the 11.149 million m³ reported for the same period of 2025, that represents a reduction of approximately 16.1%, or almost 1.8 million m³.

This nine-month comparison remains provisional: the 2025 baseline comes from secondary-source reporting and has not been verified directly against the underlying customs series.

Softwood log imports were more stable, falling 0.4% to approximately 17.94 million m³ in the first nine months of 2026. Across all species, China’s log imports declined 0.7% to 23.80 million m³, while lumber imports fell 8.7% to 16.63 million m³.

The longer comparison shows the extent of the contraction in lumber trade. In January–September 2024, China imported 20.77 million m³ of lumber across all species. Purchases this year were nearly 20% below that level, a loss of more than 4 million m³ in two years. Total log imports were approximately 13.5% lower over the same comparison.

Housing downturn continues to restrict consumption

Chinese property investment fell 20.6% in January–September 2026. New building starts declined 24.9% by floor area, while residential completions dropped 26.6%, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The reductions affect different stages of timber consumption. Fewer starts limit demand for materials used during construction, while fewer completed apartments reduce the flow of homes ready for doors, flooring, cabinets and furniture. Developers’ funding also contracted by 21.6%, including a 33.1% fall in domestic loans.

Spending on interiors remained weak. Furniture retail sales among businesses above the official reporting threshold fell 4.7% in the first nine months, and sales of building and decoration materials declined 9.7%.

Export manufacturing provided some support to wood processors. Chinese exports of plywood and similar multilayer panels increased 10.5% to 10.91 million m³ in January–September. These orders offer a source of demand outside the domestic property market, although the figures do not establish how much imported timber was used in production.

Housing reforms could support a gradual recovery

Beijing’s housing reforms aim to restore buyer confidence by reducing the risk of unfinished developments. Rules announced in August require buildings offered for presale to have their main structures completed. Mortgage proceeds for affected projects are released only after completion is registered, with transitional provisions for earlier developments.

Maximum development-loan terms have been extended to five years for presale projects and seven years for completed-home sales and commercial property projects. The longer terms are intended to help developers finance construction before receiving buyers’ mortgage funds.

More reliable delivery could encourage purchases, but the transition may also constrain new projects as developers must finance a greater share of construction upfront.

The existing-home market offers another possible source of orders. Transaction floor area rose 10.7% in January–September 2026. Renovation following those purchases could support demand for interior wood products without requiring a recovery in new building starts.

A government plan announced in September also supports improvements to older homes and adaptations for elderly residents. Local subsidies are available within the national consumer goods trade-in programme, backed by RMB250 billion this year across a broad range of products. These measures could help furniture and joinery manufacturers, though the latest sales figures show that stronger housing turnover has yet to produce a wider recovery in spending on interiors.

<div style="width: 55px; border-top: 4px solid #a51d2d;
