Lower log procurement costs, efficiency gains and favourable currency movements helped the Swedish wood-products company offset continued pressure on lumber prices.

Net sales rose 5.8% to SEK 1,286 million (€115.46 million), from SEK 1,215 million (€109.08 million). The operating margin improved from −12.2% to −0.9%.

EBITDA turned positive at SEK 41 million (€3.68 million), against a loss of SEK 89 million (€7.99 million) in the corresponding quarter of 2025. The loss after tax narrowed to SEK 19 million (€1.71 million), from SEK 127 million (€11.40 million).
Maintenance shutdowns interrupt the recovery
Despite the improvement from last year, Setra returned to an operating loss after earning SEK 15 million (€1.35 million) in the second quarter.

Planned maintenance shutdowns weighed on July, while August and September produced positive results. Third-quarter sales fell 18.6% from the second quarter’s SEK 1,579 million (€141.76 million).

The comparison also includes the disposal of Malå sawmill, sold to HS Timber Group at the end of June. The transaction reduced the operations included in Setra’s third-quarter figures.

Cheaper logs support earnings while lumber prices remain under pressure

Setra attributed part of the improvement to lower log prices following storm Johannes. The company has been working to recover and process storm-damaged timber in the Bergslagen region, where it is concentrating its operations.

Chief executive Marcus Westdahl said lower raw-material costs and continuing operational improvements were contributing to the recovery. The company is also working to increase the value obtained from each log through processing.

Selling conditions remain difficult. Setra reported continued pressure on finished-product prices, limiting the benefit from cheaper raw material. In the second quarter, the company had already noted that an expected increase in lumber prices had failed to materialise.

The result leaves Setra closer to break-even, with the improvement driven by procurement costs and internal measures rather than a strong recovery in selling prices.

A difficult start to 2026 gives way to smaller losses

Setra began the year with an operating loss of SEK 122 million (€10.95 million) on sales of SEK 1,351 million (€121.29 million). High lumber inventories in Sweden and Finland, currency movements and winter disruption affected trading and production during the first quarter.

Conditions improved in the second quarter as log costs declined and efficiency measures took effect. Building Solutions and Components also reported a positive result after production adjustments made during 2025.

Across the first nine months of 2026, the published quarterly figures total sales of SEK 4,216 million (€378.51 million) and an operating loss of SEK 119 million (€10.68 million). The first-quarter loss accounts for the nine-month deficit: the second and third quarters together generated a small operating profit.

Sales have also recovered against the previous year. Revenue fell 12.0% year on year in the first quarter, before increasing 9.5% in the second and 5.8% in the third.

Restructuring reduces fixed costs

The recovery follows a difficult 2025, when weak construction demand and high raw-material costs prompted Setra to adjust production at several sawmills and reduce activity in building solutions and components.

Its improvement programme delivered an annual fixed-cost reduction of SEK 109 million (€9.79 million), exceeding the original target of SEK 100 million (€8.98 million). Setra also reported SEK 58 million (€5.21 million) in one-off benefits.

The group nevertheless recorded a full-year operating loss of SEK 622 million (€55.84 million). This included an asset impairment of SEK 116 million (€10.41 million) in Building Solutions and Components, booked in the fourth quarter.

The Malå sale represents a further change in the business. Setra is focusing investment and operational development on Bergslagen in central Sweden, following the transfer of the northern Swedish sawmill to HS Timber Group.
Sustained profitability remains the next test
Positive trading in August and September gives Setra a stronger position than a year earlier. Lower log costs and reduced fixed expenses have substantially narrowed its losses, but the third-quarter result leaves little margin for renewed pressure on selling prices or production costs.

The company’s operations span lumber and further-processed wood products, including cross-laminated timber and wood components. Demand from construction and industrial customers remains central to its ability to sustain the recent improvement.

For Setra, the next step is to maintain profitable production beyond individual months while securing sufficient returns from both lumber and further-processed products.

<div style="width: 100%;
