For wood-product and furniture businesses, the rise adds to transport bills, although the cost varies sharply by destination and direction of trade.

Drewry’s World Container Index reached US$4,585 per 40ft container on 22 October, up 2% from the previous week and its highest level in 15 weeks. The composite stood 163% above the corresponding week last year.

The latest increase follows a rise from US$4,351 on 8 October to US$4,485 on 15 October. Across those two weeks, the benchmark gained US$234 per container, or 5.4%. All eight routes included in the published table recorded higher rates in the latest week.

The composite, however, conceals substantial differences. Shipping from Shanghai to New York costs more than US$10,000 per container, while the Rotterdam–Shanghai assessment remains below US$650. For exporters and importers, the relevant route provides a more useful measure of cost pressure than the global average.

Asia–Europe rates rise fastest

Shanghai–Genoa freight increased to US$4,152 per 40ft container, up 5% from the previous week. Shanghai–Rotterdam rose 3% to US$3,632.

The cumulative increase since early October is more pronounced. Genoa-bound rates gained US$456 per container between 8 and 22 October, equivalent to 12.3%. Rotterdam-bound rates increased by US$295, or 8.8%.

For a shipment of ten containers, those changes would add US$4,560 on the Shanghai–Genoa route or US$2,950 on Shanghai–Rotterdam, assuming freight was purchased at the respective index assessments. Actual bookings depend on negotiated terms, sailing dates and additional charges.

The Mediterranean route now carries a US$520 premium over Shanghai–Rotterdam, compared with US$359 two weeks earlier. Buyers choosing between gateways would also need to account for inland transport, handling and delivery times before treating the lower ocean rate as a saving.

Carriers cut sailings as port congestion eases

The upward pressure on European routes is coming partly from capacity management. Drewry reported eight cancelled sailings scheduled for the following week on Asia–Europe services, compared with two in the current week.

Cancelling a sailing removes scheduled transport capacity. This can support freight rates even when port operations improve, because shippers have fewer departures available for their cargo.

At Shanghai, vessel waiting times fell from 97 hours in week 38 to 38 hours in week 42, a reduction of about 61%. Faster port handling therefore coincides with tighter scheduled capacity on some routes. Drewry expects a further modest increase in Asia–Europe rates in the following week.

The consultancy’s separate cancellations tracker gives a longer view. Across the main East–West trades, 56 of 714 scheduled sailings were expected to be cancelled during weeks 44–48, approximately 8% of the total. Asia–North Europe and Mediterranean services accounted for 54% of those cancellations, followed by eastbound transpacific services with 32% and transatlantic services with 14%.

Most services are still expected to operate. The commercial effect depends on where cancellations fall and whether the remaining departures offer enough space for the cargo awaiting shipment.

US routes remain the most expensive

Shanghai–New York remained the highest-priced route in the table at US$10,166 per 40ft container, up 1% in the latest week. Shanghai–Los Angeles increased 2% to US$8,007.

Despite the weekly rise, the New York assessment remained US$54 below its 8 October level. Los Angeles, by contrast, was US$383 more expensive than two weeks earlier.

The annual comparisons show the scale of the increase faced by importers. Shanghai–Los Angeles rates were 250% above a year earlier, while Shanghai–New York was up 197%. The corresponding increases were 109% for Rotterdam and 124% for Genoa.

Drewry attributed support for transpacific rates to strong US import demand. With two cancelled sailings announced for the following week, down from six, it expected rates on those routes to remain broadly stable.

Different costs for wood importers and exporters

For European businesses importing containerised furniture, flooring, plywood or other wood products from China, the Shanghai–Europe increases raise the freight component of landed costs. Whether that increase reaches selling prices depends on purchasing contracts, inventories and the margin available to absorb it.

The position is different for European lumber exporters shipping to China. Rotterdam–Shanghai was assessed at US$646 per container, compared with US$3,632 in the opposite direction. The China-bound rate rose by US$18 over two weeks, or 2.9%, substantially less in both dollars and percentage terms than the westbound increase.

The same directional gap appears in transpacific trade. Los Angeles–Shanghai stood at US$847, compared with US$8,007 from Shanghai to Los Angeles. The westbound assessment may provide context for US wood exporters, but a specific shipment still requires a quote covering its origin, destination, weight and equipment requirements.

Container benchmarks also do not describe the cost of all forest-product shipments. Cargo moved by bulk or breakbulk services follows different freight arrangements.

Transatlantic shipping also becomes more expensive

Rotterdam–New York rates increased to US$3,181 per container, up 3% in the week and 85% from a year earlier. For European suppliers selling containerised wood products into the United States, that movement adds another variable to export pricing alongside tariffs, exchange rates and inland logistics.

The reverse route, New York–Rotterdam, reached US$1,158, up 2% over the week and 35% year on year. Shipping westbound across the Atlantic was therefore around 2.7 times as expensive as shipping eastbound on these assessments.

Those differences can materially affect delivered-price comparisons between suppliers. A lower factory-gate price does not necessarily produce a cheaper offer once freight and other delivery costs are included.

Higher freight bills complicate pricing

The October rebound leaves shippers facing higher spot costs without a uniform tightening across every trade lane. European import routes have recorded the fastest recent increases, while US-bound services from Asia remain much more expensive in absolute terms.

For wood-product businesses quoting deliveries several weeks ahead, the immediate risk is a mismatch between the freight allowance included in a sales price and the rate available when the shipment is booked. That exposure is greater where the seller bears transport costs and has not secured a freight rate.

Further increases will depend on whether carriers maintain capacity cuts and whether cargo demand fills the remaining sailings. Better port performance can shorten delays, but it does not by itself guarantee lower freight bills.

<div style="width: 100%; margin: 25px 0; padding-top: 14px; border-top: 4px solid #e3120b; background: #fff;
