Buying of spruce and fir sawlogs has slowed, prices are under pressure in some regions, and isolated intake restrictions have appeared in Lower Austria and Styria.

Softwood exports fall as overseas markets weaken

Austrian softwood lumber exports fell 7% year on year in January–August 2026, with shipments to the European Union down 3%. Softwood sawlog imports declined 16% to approximately 2.7 million m³ over the same period.

Exports stood at 3.67 million m³, down from 3.94 million m³. Italy remained almost unchanged at 1.65 million m³. Germany fell 8.4%, the Levant including transit 19.8%, Japan 19.6% and the United States 45.1%. These figures cover the table’s lumber category, which is not explicitly restricted to softwood.

Italy’s stability contrasts with the reductions elsewhere. Thereis a continued weak Austrian construction, conflict-related disruption in foreign markets and uncertainty over US trade policy as pressures on lumber sales.

Mills adjust log intake to lumber sales

Sawlog inventories are generally well supplied following increased availability of salvage timber, or adjusted to the volume of lumber that mills can sell. Prepared logs are still being collected promptly, although some buyers in Lower Austria and Styria have introduced intake limits.

Spruce and fir short logs in the reported A/B/C, 2b category traded at EUR 115–129 per solid m³ across the eight provinces. Upper Austria’s range was EUR 115–120, compared with EUR 120–129 in Styria and EUR 121–127 in Tyrol. These are roadside transaction prices from September to early October, excluding VAT.

Long-log quotations were higher in several regions. Styria reported EUR 126–131 per m³, Lower Austria EUR 122–128 and Salzburg EUR 120–128. The chamber says prices have already been adjusted in some areas, without quantifying the reductions.

Larch remains short of supply

Larch continues to differ from spruce: demand still exceeds supply. Reported larch sawlog prices in the A/B/C, 3a-and-larger category ranged from EUR 100–150 per m³ in Upper Austria to EUR 150–181 in Styria. Salzburg and Tyrol both reached EUR 175, while Vorarlberg reached EUR 180.

Imports give a mixed picture

Lower softwood sawlog imports have accompanied weaker lumber exports, but there isn't a general shortage of sawlogs. Domestic salvage timber has helped replenish inventories, while mills have adjusted procurement to their sales.

Imports in the wider lumber category rose 4.9% to 991,707 m³ in January–July. Germany supplied 481,309 m³, up 10.4%, while Finland fell 33.1% to 81,057 m³. Imports of sawmill by-products increased 1.9% to 1.19 million tonnes.

Industrial buyers continue taking wood promptly

Firm industrial-roundwood demand is determining a substantially lower lumber production and reduced import opportunities. Both pulpwood and wood for mechanical pulping are being sought, transport capacity is sufficient, and prepared material is being collected and accepted quickly.

Spruce/fir pulpwood quotations ranged from EUR 80–88 per oven-dry tonne in Burgenland to EUR 106–126 in Salzburg. Lower Austria reported EUR 90–105 and Upper Austria EUR 95–115. Wood for mechanical pulping was quoted at EUR 97–110 in Burgenland, EUR 95–105 in Lower Austria and EUR 95–114 in Styria.

Selected Austrian sawlog prices

September–early October 2026 · EUR per solid m³ under bark · Roadside · Excluding VAT

Region

Spruce/fir
A/B/C, 2b

Larch
A/B/C, 3a+

Burgenland

118–122

140–160

Carinthia

121–125

145-160

Lower Austria

115–125

145–165

Upper Austria

115–120

100–150

Salzburg

117–128

155–175

Styria

120–129

150–181

Tyrol

121–127

150–175

Vorarlberg

115–122

150–180

Austria’s sawmills are facing weaker softwood lumber sales while supplies of salvage timber keep many logyards well stocked.
