Germany\u2019s wood industry is becoming more hopeful about the months ahead, although companies have yet to see a convincing improvement in day-to-day business. Demand remains uncertain, and the distance between expectations and actual trading conditions is still considerable.<\/p>\n
The differences within the industry are just as pronounced. Some construction-related businesses are showing signs of stabilisation, while sawmills continue to report difficult conditions and see little prospect of near-term relief.<\/p>\n
HDH, the main association representing Germany\u2019s wood industry, reported that its September business climate indicator rose to \u221215.8 points from \u221219.9 in the previous month. Expectations improved to \u221215.0 points from \u221222.0, while the assessment of current conditions remained subdued at \u221216.6. The improvement therefore rests largely on what companies expect rather than a substantial change in trading.<\/div>\n
The sector also lost ground relative to German manufacturing. The ifo business climate reading for manufacturing rose to \u22124.2 points from \u22129.6, widening the gap with the wood industry. Two consecutive monthly improvements have yet to reverse the deterioration recorded earlier in the year.<\/p>\n
Sawmills stand out for their continued pessimism. Their assessment of current conditions averaged \u221244.8 points over the three months to September, the lowest reading among the wood industry segments surveyed. Although that assessment improved slightly, sawmilling was the only segment where expectations for the following six months deteriorated.<\/p>\n
Timber prefab construction presented a different picture, recording the strongest current conditions. Even there, however, expectations remained negative. Wood-based panels were the only segment with a positive forward-looking balance. These sector comparisons use three-month averages, rather than the monthly readings used for the headline indicator.<\/p>\n
The improvement in construction-related businesses has some support from housing approvals. The number of dwellings approved rose by 12.9% year on year between January and July, while prefabricated construction accounted for 26.7% of the one- and two-family housing market in the first half.<\/p>\n
But the increase in approvals has not yet delivered a sustained recovery in building activity. Growth slowed in July, and construction orders remained below the previous year\u2019s level. Furniture producers, meanwhile, continued to face reluctant consumers, limiting the benefit from improving sentiment elsewhere.<\/p>\n
Separate first-half figures published by HDH show how much pressure remains behind the confidence readings. Revenue at wood industry businesses with more than 50 employees fell by 0.4% to just under EUR 18 billion. The number of businesses declined by 4%, while employment contracted by 3.5%.<\/p>\n
Since 2020, the industry has lost more than 20,000 jobs, equivalent to almost 15% of its workforce, with furniture manufacturing accounting for most of the reduction. Construction-related wood businesses were closer to stabilisation, with first-half revenue only 0.3% below the previous year.<\/p>\n
For primary wood processors, HDH identified a more difficult combination: higher raw-material costs and challenging sales conditions, despite modest revenue gains. That distinction helps explain why improving turnover does not necessarily translate into better assessments of profitability or prospects.<\/p>\n
HDH has called for lower operating costs, pointing to energy expenses, social contributions and administrative requirements. It warned that further closures could follow if market conditions and the economics of production fail to improve.<\/p>\n
