The latest figures show a smaller year-on-year decline in August, but shipments remain well below last year’s level.

EU exports totalled 1.66 million m³ in January–August 2026, down 36.5% from 2.62 million m³ a year earlier. Export value fell more sharply, dropping 42.5% to EUR 450.6 million from EUR 783.7 million.

The average export unit value declined from EUR 299.40/m³ to EUR 271.23/m³, a fall of 9.4%. Suppliers therefore earned less per cubic metre as well as shipping almost 956,400 m³ less than in the first eight months of 2025.

Germany and Sweden accounted for nearly 90% of the volume lost. German shipments fell 38.6% to 865,836 m³, while export value dropped 44.3% to EUR 227.4 million. Germany nevertheless retained just over half of EU shipments to the US, with a volume share of 52.1%.

Swedish exports declined 39.5% to 475,973 m³. Their value fell 47.7% to EUR 129.4 million, with the average unit value down to EUR 271.81/m³ from EUR 314.11/m³. Together, Germany and Sweden supplied 80.8% of the EU total.

Finland moved in the opposite direction. Its shipments increased 40.0% to 76,666 m³, taking it into third place among EU suppliers. Export value rose 21.4% to EUR 25.4 million, although the average unit value fell to EUR 331.63/m³ from EUR 382.54/m³.

Czech exports also increased, by 7.5% to 56,283 m³, while Romanian shipments were almost unchanged at 55,276 m³. These gains were too small to offset the cuts elsewhere. Latvia’s exports fell 48.5% to 58,221 m³, and Austria’s dropped 39.4% to 51,005 m³.

The contraction was particularly steep in spruce lumber. Shipments in that customs category fell 45.5% to 923,031 m³, compared with an 18.8% decline in pine to 677,316 m³. Pine consequently made up a larger share of the remaining trade.

August was less weak than the start of the year. EU shipments reached 211,005 m³, down 14.6% from August 2025, while their value fell 12.3% to EUR 58.8 million. In January, volumes had been 61.9% below the corresponding month of 2025. The narrower August decline does not yet establish a sustained recovery.

For January–August, the 2026 volume was the lowest in the 2020–2026 series. Shipments had reached 3.55 million m³ in the same period of 2022, more than twice this year’s level. The modest increase recorded in 2025 has now been more than reversed.

EU softwood lumber exports to the US — January–August 2025/2026

Exporter

Volume 2025
m³

Volume 2026
m³

Change
%

Value 2025
EUR

Value 2026
EUR

Change
%

Avg. price 2025
EUR/m³

Avg. price 2026
EUR/m³

Volume share 2026
%

Germania

1,409,791

865,836

-38.6

408,664,155

227,426,027

-44.3

289.88

262.67

52.1

Sweden

786,865

475,973

-39.5

247,163,357

129,375,623

-47.7

314.11

271.81

28.7

Finlanda

54,745

76,666

+40.0

20,942,107

25,424,497

+21.4

382.54

331.63

4.6

Latvia

112,955

58,221

-48.5

32,597,827

12,213,362

-62.5

288.59

209.78

3.5

Czechia

52,346

56,283

+7.5

16,116,998

16,709,572

+3.7

307.89

296.88

3.4

Romania

54,670

55,276

+1.1

15,028,405

14,878,526

-1.0

274.89

269.17

3.3

Austria

84,172

51,005

-39.4

23,616,717

15,195,743

-35.7

280.58

297.93

3.1

Estonia

8,979

10,373

+15.5

4,026,194

4,790,191

+19.0

448.40

461.79

0.6

Others

53,119

11,634

-78.1

15,578,101

4,565,933

-70.7

293.27

392.46

0.7

EU27 total

2,617,642

1,661,267

-36.5

783,733,861

450,579,474

-42.5

299.40

271.23

100.0

European softwood lumber suppliers are selling substantially less to the United States this year, with lower export prices adding to the loss of business.
