Latvia\u2019s roundwood market remains uneven this autumn, with firm spruce sawlog prices contrasting with declines in birch veneer logs and aspen. Buyers face different procurement conditions depending on species and end use.<\/p>\n

Spruce sawlogs measuring 18\u201328 cm stood at EUR 109\/m\u00b3 on October 19, up 5% from the comparable observation a year earlier. Pine sawlogs of the same diameter range were almost unchanged year on year, slipping 0.7% to EUR 102.8\/m\u00b3. Neither assortment moved over the latest two weeks, while spruce prices also held steady over three months.<\/p>\n

The figures show sustained price support for spruce, although they do not establish whether this comes primarily from demand or restricted supply. Pine\u2019s flatter annual performance shows that the two main softwood assortments are following different paths.<\/p>\n

Birch veneer logs, class B, fell 12.4% year on year to EUR 108\/m\u00b3. A 5.9% decline over the latest fortnight indicates that prices have continued to weaken recently. Aspen sawlogs were down 22.6% at EUR 79.3\/m\u00b3, whereas black alder gained 8.6% to EUR 73.3\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Smaller hardwood assortments used in packaging rose 20.2% year on year to EUR 62.5\/m\u00b3, including a 10.6% increase over the latest two weeks. Mixed-species firewood was 31.7% higher at EUR 47.8\/m\u00b3. The contrast with falling veneer and aspen log prices points to an adjustment across individual product markets rather than a general rise or decline in timber prices.<\/p>\n

Attention now turns to winter procurement. State forest manager Latvijas valsts me\u017ei plans to launch a roundwood sale on October 22 for December 2026 and January 2027 deliveries, with auctions scheduled for October 28\u201330. The results could provide a clearer indication of processors\u2019 purchasing appetite heading into the new year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
