The company's financial difficulties have led to asset sales, business closures and changes in distribution arrangements across the sector.

Headlam Group plc and its main trading subsidiary, HFD Limited, entered administration on September 8, 2026, after attempts to secure additional financing failed. The company supplied carpets, laminate, engineered wood flooring, vinyl and other floorcoverings to independent retailers and contractors across the UK.

Headlam reported revenue of £498.7 million in 2025 but recorded a pre-tax loss of £69.6 million. Its financial position deteriorated as weaker sales reduced cash generation, while warehouse, transport and staffing costs remained high.

Administrators from Interpath initially considered restructuring the business through an arrangement with creditors, alongside the possibility of selling its operations as a whole. Neither option produced a viable agreement, and the administrators proceeded with separate asset sales.

On October 6, Likewise Group acquired selected Headlam assets for £14.9 million. The purchase includes a 90,000-square-foot distribution centre in Thatcham, Berkshire, together with equipment, inventory and the Crucial Trading and Concept Flooring businesses. Around 110 employees transferred to Likewise.

The transaction does not include Headlam Group itself or all its remaining subsidiaries. Likewise has also agreed to assist administrators with the sale of remaining inventory over nine months, using its distribution network and Headlam's Coleshill premises.

The acquisition gives Likewise additional warehouse capacity in southern England, established flooring brands and access to customers previously supplied by Headlam. The company has set a medium-term revenue target of £300 million.

Headlam's distribution network contracts

Headlam's administration has resulted in the closure of 53 trade counters across the UK. Its Northern Irish subsidiary, Ceco Flooring, entered administration on September 30 and subsequently ceased trading.

Administrators are continuing to examine options for other businesses, including Domus and Melrose, which were not included in the Likewise transaction.

Headlam had built its position around a nationwide distribution network capable of supplying independent retailers with relatively small orders and frequent deliveries. Warehouses, transport fleets and trade counters allowed the company to handle a broad product range, but also required substantial expenditure.

As sales declined, the cost of maintaining that network became increasingly difficult to cover. The company's financial problems were compounded by the prolonged weakness of the British flooring market, where demand from housing construction and renovation has remained subdued.

The sale to Likewise represents only a fraction of Headlam's former annual turnover, although the buyer has acquired selected assets rather than the business as a whole.

Suppliers face unpaid debts and uncertainty over orders

Headlam's administration has left flooring manufacturers and other suppliers facing potential losses on outstanding invoices.

The administrators have warned that proceeds from asset disposals are unlikely to repay unsecured creditors in full. Headlam shareholders are also unlikely to receive any return, and the company's listing on the London Stock Exchange is expected to be cancelled.

The financial exposure of individual European laminate and wood flooring manufacturers has not been disclosed.

Headlam had provided an established route into the British market for manufacturers supplying independent retailers and flooring contractors. Its warehouses and delivery network allowed suppliers to reach customers without operating their own nationwide distribution systems.

Some of that business may transfer to Likewise or other wholesalers, but the acquisition does not guarantee that previous purchasing arrangements will continue.

The nine-month agreement to dispose of Headlam's remaining inventory could also affect replacement orders. Products already held in warehouses can continue reaching retailers without generating equivalent new purchases from manufacturers.

For suppliers, recovering unpaid invoices and replacing Headlam's former orders are now separate problems. Likewise has acquired selected assets, but has made no commitment to maintain Headlam's previous purchasing volumes.

The administrators have yet to complete the disposal of the remaining businesses or establish the final recovery available to creditors. Until then, manufacturers supplying the UK flooring market face uncertainty over both outstanding payments and future sales.

Changes are underway in the British flooring distribution market following the administration of Headlam Group, one of the country’s largest suppliers of floorcoverings.
