Prices have also climbed in Austria, Switzerland and the Baltic region, while the latest Polish retail figures show a slight decline after earlier increases.

Germany's average residential pellet price reached €464.61 per tonne in October, according to the German Pellet Institute (DEPI), based on a six-tonne bulk delivery. The corresponding net price was €419.11 per tonne, compared with €327.63 a year earlier.

Prices have risen steadily since July, when the net average stood at €350.30 per tonne. By September, it had reached €410.31, before increasing again in October.

The rise has not been confined to the start of the heating season. German pellet prices were already more than 30% above year-earlier levels during the summer, when household purchases are usually lower.

DEPI has linked the increase partly to higher wood raw material costs. Pellet producers rely heavily on sawdust and other sawmill residues, whose availability depends on production levels in the sawmilling industry.

Germany: wood pellet price development, 2025–2026

Month

2025 (EUR/t)

2026 (EUR/t)

Change (%)

January

270.20

364.41

+34.9%

April

306.77

365.82

+19.2%

July

267.95

350.30

+30.7%

August

276.33

383.40

+38.7%

September

297.34

410.31

+38.0%

October

327.63

419.11

+27.9%

Source: DEPI/DEPV. Nevertheless, Austrian households are paying considerably more for pellets than during the previous heating season.

In Switzerland, the national average reached CHF 524 per tonne in October, equivalent to approximately €555.

Swiss prices remain higher than those reported in Germany and Austria, although differences in taxation, delivery quantities and distribution costs limit direct comparisons.

Polish pellet prices ease in October after months of increases

Polish wood pellet prices have eased slightly in October following several months of increases that pushed retail offers above PLN 2,400 per tonne.

The median advertised price fell to PLN 2,358 (approximately €555) per tonne in the week ending October 18, compared with PLN 2,410 (approximately €567) at the beginning of the month. The latest survey covered 173 offers from 36 retailers.

The increase earlier this year has been associated with tighter supplies of sawdust and other wood-processing residues, higher production costs and stronger purchasing ahead of the heating season. Pellet manufacturers compete with wood-based panel producers and other industrial users for raw materials, while sawmill production determines how much residue is available.

Poland's Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) identified a growing imbalance between demand and domestic supply in an August investigation. Around 450,000 Polish households now use pellet or wood-fired boilers, more than 90,000 above the 2023 level. Government subsidies for replacing heating systems have contributed to the increase in demand.

State Forests reported that pellet prices had risen from around PLN 1,700–1,800 (€400–424) per tonne in autumn 2025 to PLN 2,500–3,000 (€588–706) at the beginning of 2026. A cold winter, reduced imports from Ukraine and higher sawdust costs contributed to the increases. Sawdust prices were reported to have roughly doubled in some cases.

Retail prices have since retreated from their earlier peaks, but the supply problem remains. UOKiK found no evidence that the increases resulted from anti-competitive practices, attributing them instead to domestic pellet production failing to keep pace with demand.

Latvian pellet prices rise sharply despite domestic production

Latvia, one of Europe's established pellet-producing and exporting countries, has also recorded substantial increases.

October price monitoring by MezaTirgus showed average prices of €326 per tonne for bulk pellets, €355 for big-bag deliveries and €373 for bagged pellets.

A Latvian competition authority assessment reported in October found that the average advertised price of a 15 kg pellet bag had risen by approximately 73% between October 2025 and the end of August 2026.

Latvian producers supply both domestic customers and export markets. Prices are affected by the availability of sawmill residues, local demand and export sales.

The Baltpool pellet index stood at €67.13/MWh on October 13, equivalent to approximately €316 per tonne excluding VAT on the index's energy conversion basis.

This is a wholesale indicator and cannot be compared directly with delivered household prices.

French pellet prices remain below German levels

French residential bulk pellet prices averaged approximately €388 per tonne in the second quarter of 2026, while bagged pellets averaged around €385 per tonne.

More recent commercial offers were higher, with TotalEnergies quoting approximately €431 per tonne in September.

At the production level, CEEB reported June ex-works prices of €273.70 per tonne for bulk pellets and €288.30 for bagged pellets, excluding VAT.

The difference between producer and consumer prices includes packaging, transport, distribution margins and taxes.

France has expanded domestic pellet production over recent years, although supplies of sawmill residues remain important for manufacturers.

Sweden and Denmark report contrasting prices

In Sweden, residential bulk pellets were quoted at approximately €385 per tonne in August, compared with around €242 per tonne for commercial deliveries.

The difference is partly attributable to delivery volumes and the type of customer.

Sweden's domestic pellet industry draws much of its raw material from the forest-products sector, particularly sawmills.

In Denmark, the Pilleindex retail indicator reached DKK 4,160/t (approximately €557/t) per tonne on October 19, including transport.

Denmark relies heavily on imported wood pellets, making domestic prices sensitive to international supply costs and freight rates.

European wood pellet prices

Country

Price

Period

Market segment

Germania

EUR 464.61/t

October 2026

Residential bulk

Austria

EUR 445/t

October 2026

Residential bulk

Switzerland

CHF 524/t

October 2026

National average

Franța

EUR 388/t

Q2 2026

Residential bulk

Poland

PLN 2,358/t (approx.
