Mets\u00e4 Group, UPM and Austrian timber producer Pfeifer have been named among the buyers of wood harvested from Google's planned data center sites in Finland, where extensive forest clearing has come under investigation because environmental impact assessments were still underway.<\/p>\n

Timber from the Muhos and Kajaani sites entered the companies' normal procurement channels through regional forest management associations. The buyers were not involved in Google's construction projects, and no findings of illegal harvesting have been made against them, according to Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.<\/p>\n

The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation is now preparing to contact FSC certification bodies concerning the timber. The matter has added a wood procurement dimension to a dispute that has so far centred on Google's preparations for its new data centers.<\/p>\n

Mets\u00e4 Group disputes supplier's handling of deliveries<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mets\u00e4 Group has confirmed receiving approximately 5,000 m\u00b3 of wood from Kajaani and another 50 m\u00b3 from Muhos. Together, the deliveries represented about 0.3% of the group's monthly wood consumption.<\/p>\n

The company said it had neither undertaken the harvesting nor commissioned the work. It also held no logging rights at either site.<\/p>\n

The timber arrived through Northern Finland Forest Market, which represents regional forest management associations and supplies wood to Mets\u00e4 Group under an existing framework agreement.<\/p>\n

Harvesting at Muhos was handled by the Oulu Region Forest Management Association, while the Kainuu Forest Management Association was responsible for the Kajaani operations.<\/p>\n

Juha Jumppanen, Mets\u00e4 Group's wood procurement executive, addressed the reports on LinkedIn, stating that responsibility for complying with harvesting legislation rested with the organisations holding the logging rights.<\/p>\n

He also said the supplier had breached its agreement with Mets\u00e4 Group concerning the origin of the timber. The company filed a complaint with the supplier and suspended further deliveries in September after questions emerged about the harvesting.<\/p>\n

Mets\u00e4 Group has said that if the affected wood has already been processed, it will deduct an equivalent quantity from its certified wood accounting.<\/p>\n

UPM received pulpwood; Pfeifer also identified<\/strong><\/p>\n

UPM was another recipient of wood from the sites. Finnish media reported that the company purchased a relatively small quantity of pulpwood, delivered to its Kymi and Pietarsaari mills.<\/p>\n

Pfeifer, the Austrian group with sawmilling and wood-processing operations in Finland and elsewhere in Europe, was also identified as a buyer.<\/p>\n

The available reports do not specify Pfeifer's purchase volumes or the facilities to which the timber was delivered.<\/p>\n

The transactions were made through established timber procurement arrangements rather than direct involvement by the wood-processing companies in Google's land-clearing operations.<\/p>\n

The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation has said it plans to notify FSC certification bodies about buyers of timber originating from the sites.<\/p>\n

The association has questioned whether the wood can meet certification requirements if the harvesting is subsequently found to have breached environmental legislation.<\/p>\n

For now, the legality of the clearing remains under examination. The fact that a company purchased timber from the sites does not establish that it violated harvesting regulations or certification requirements.<\/p>\n

More than 500 hectares cleared at Google's sites<\/strong><\/p>\n

The timber originated from two of Google's planned data center developments in northern Finland.<\/p>\n

At Muhos, approximately 330 hectares of forest have been cleared, while the area affected at Kajaani approaches 200 hectares. The projects form part of Google's EUR 13 billion Finnish data center investment programme.<\/p>\n

As GWMI previously reported, the clearing began before the environmental impact assessments had been completed.<\/p>\n

On October 6, Finland's Licensing and Supervision Agency instructed Google's project company, Tuike Finland Oy, to stop work that substantially changes the sites, including further logging, excavation, soil removal and related construction activities.<\/p>\n

Google has maintained that the forestry operations complied with the Finnish Forestry Act. The Finnish Forest Centre has also reported no problems with the harvesting notifications under forestry legislation.<\/p>\n

Buyers await outcome of environmental review<\/strong><\/p>\n

The next developments will depend on the Finnish authorities' examination of the clearing operations and any subsequent assessment by certification bodies.<\/p>\n

Mets\u00e4 Group has already stopped receiving wood from the affected supplier and challenged the deliveries under its procurement agreement. The company has also explained how it intends to handle any affected volumes in its certified wood accounting.<\/p>\n

UPM has reported limited purchases, while the quantities received by Pfeifer have not been disclosed.<\/p>\n

For the companies involved, the timber was purchased through established supply arrangements with forest management organisations. The questions now concern the status of those deliveries following the intervention by environmental authorities.<\/p>\n

No final ruling on the legality of the harvesting has been reported, and the three industrial buyers have not been accused by the authorities of carrying out the clearing.<\/p>\n
